I'm speaking of Black Sabbath only here.I've always liked Tony Iommi's solo's on Dirty Women & You Won't Change Me from The Technical Ecstacy LP. Lots of people give that album a bad rap but i have always enjoyed it because it was totally different,maybe i'm a little wacko but i love the solo on It's AlrightConfused.Then on Sabotage i absolutely love the solo's in Am I Going Insane(Radio) and Megalomania.Now moving to the Dio era i like the solo's in Lonely Is The Word from the Heaven And Hell LP and Over And Over From the Mob Rules LP. Of course i realize Mr. Iommi is more famous for riffs than solo's.

In no specific order:

Roman Bunka in "Lost Scooters" from the live album of Aera.


Bunka actually is my favorite guitar player; I could name many of his solos. He has a very original style. Unfortunately he is very little known though he has been playing for over 40 years now. But who knows Embryo, Aera or his solo work?

Christian Boulé in "Crystal Palace" from his album "Photo Musik" (the odd spelling is his).


Robert Fripp in "St. Elmo's Fire" from Brian Eno's "Another Green World".


Steve Hillage at the end of "Radio Gnome Invisible" from Gong's "Live Etc."


Volker Kriegel in "Hypnotic Pignose" from his album "Topical Harvest"


These are just a few examples; I could name many more.

(Technically is not a "guitar solo"; but the technique and the way he plays it is beautiful)

4- Carlos Santana; Santana - "Europa (Earth's Cry Heaven's Smile)"

5- Guthrie Govan; The Aristocrats - "Furtive Jack"

6- David Gilmour; Pink Floyd - "Time" "Money" "Comfortably Numb"  

7- Syu; Galneryus - "My Last Farewell" (Not prog.... but it is an impressive solo) 

8- Tosin Abasi; Animals as Leaders - "Tempting Time"
