Me and my guitar player have a small disagreement and would like to hear other progers opinions!

Steven Wilson's song "No Part of Me" is one of my favorite songs from "Grace for Drowning"
and when I first ever heard it live from "Get all you deserve" DVD
I fell in love with the live version better!!!!! Clap

The addition of Marco on the drums and live instrumentation just blew my mind!
now.... my guitar player says; "the studio/original version is way better" Dead

the small debate lasted 30 min... and would like hear different opinions :)Smile

His live bands have all been great, and certainly add quite a bit to the performances.  I almost got to see the Raven band at the Night of the Prog festival last year, and I was so very bummed when it turned out that I couldn't make it.  There are certain aspects of this Get All You Deserve performance that I prefer to the Grace For Drowning original:

- Adam Holzman's keyboard solo
- Theo Travis' sax solo
- Stage energy

But it is for these reasons that I prefer the studio recording:

- Steven's vocals
- Impeccable studio production (also Steven's work)
- An ambience that is missing in the live performance
- More of a slow build to the climax of the song

Yes, this is how I feel. Usually, a live performance has some changes that enhance the song, but misses other aspects of it. On a studio version, you get the clearest idea of the artists are trying to express, while i the live version, is more on the moment, the dynamics that are happening between the bend members. Sometimes it enhances and makes the song better, but not always. In this case, I also prefer the studio version.

I could see that...

And I was actually saying that it be cool if he re-recorder the songs with those additions to the music
I would think it be beautiful!!!

I'd rather have the violin over the guitar. And the drum work distracts me from the atmosphere that the guitar, bass, and piano players are trying to establish. And the studio vocal delivery is better. Live it sounds like Steven is out of breath. And I miss the claps.

I guess all I'm saying is that the studio arrangement is better. Studio for me.

The live version is better in my opinion.
Holzman's moog solo is just perfect and the chapman stick is so agressive on the live version

I would have to hear them again, but it's not uncommon that I like live versions better. I think most of the versions I've heard from "Grace from Drowning" I have liked better live... except for Jordan Rudess piano parts which I found charming and don't sound quiet the same way on the live versions. Also, I got to see "The Raven" live, and I think I liked most of the songs better that way... and they played a few songs from "Grace" and they were awsome too... plus, he turned up the guitar into almos heavy metal and that was great too.

Marco is a great drummer so I would probably pick the live version
