That subtle trumpeting at the beginning (and later on) gets me every time. May be my favorite song on The Least. Has a different feel than the rest of the songs, I think. Not so dark (till the climax). As Dayvenkirq said, the climax for Pilgrims just doesn't do it. Why it's such an acclaimed song on Still Life is beyond me. I prefer just about every song on the album. As it goes, it's probably my favorite Graaf album after Pawn Hearts. White!!

Pilgrims is a very deep spiritual song. So lyrical.A hymn to humanism. So I vote for this song.

That's the weirdest thing I've read in a while. Especially coming from perhaps PA's biggest VdGG/KC-fan. It just doesn't make ANY sense. Emperor reminds me of both VdGG and KC simultaneously. Progrock gloom magic! Anyway I love all the songs as I pretty much love every single VdGG-song ever recorded (pre-comeback) 1 Pilgrims (voted) 1 Emperor 3 When She Comes 4 White Hammer 5 Octopus (but love, love the re-recording on the H to He... reissue)

When She Comes. A grand production for the group. I like the Elvis review-style break before the vocal section that finishes the song. Sure, it's not a classic VDGG tune like Emperor In His War Room, but it was very unique and from a very refreshing album that marked the middle of the '70s for the band.

Wow !! This is a tough decision between Octopus and White Hammer !! All phenomenal tracks here, but I love those early ones dearly. Suppose right now I'll vote for Octopus.......
.......but in true VDGG mood, this can change at any moment |

"When She Comes" is my fave from this list, and in my top five of all VdGG tunes. To me, it has it all: it actually *rocks* (very little of the pre-Godbluff stuff does it like this; to me, VdGG is the only prog band, besides Crimson, of the classic era that could get close to the edged-out glory of heavy metal, but only from Godbluff onward), has a catchy chorus (which few VdGG songs do, because few have real choruses), a blistering sax solo, and a really fun riff which comes in and out the whole way through.
"Octopus" is my close second (if not in my top five, it's definitely top ten of the catalog). A great piece of psychedelic, late 60's psycho-drama. Wonderful 60's organ throughout, and a *great* vocal performance by Hammill. This is the one song on AGM where you can hear that scream developing (that he would perfect later), but it's delivered with a smooth timbre as he'd not yet developed that harsh growl... all of which works to the song's favor. Of the remaining, probably "Pilgrims" and then the other two are okay but throwbacks to the "classic" prog era which seem a bit dated now. "Emperor" in particular has always struck me as something that Jethro Tull might have done (I like the song, but not a huge Tull fan). |

Voted for 'When She Comes', because not many would notice this song. It's one of the best examples of Hammill's gothic side (and actually the only song from 'World Record' I really like).
Although I really prefer 'Pilgrims' slightly over it. 'White Hammer' is more interesting technically than musically, because for me the best thing about this song is a transition from pastoral organ sound at the beginning to the heavy jazz-driven chaos. 'Octopus' and 'The Emperor In His War-Room' never caught my attention at all. |

Standing in the space. That holds the silent lace of night away from you. You think that you can hold. The searing, molten gold between your fingers. But it slips through, tearing tendons as it goes.

For darkness turns once more to light. Through the skies, his white horse flies. To find a land beyond the night. |

I kinda had a feeling when I saw this thread title that nothing would be on here from Pawn Hearts or Godbluff.
Anyway, Pilgrims.
