Instalment two!

Opeth has an even number of studio albums, so I went with Deliverence rather than Blackwater Park as its current rating of 3.75 is closest to Heritage at 3.89. This should be interesting since some consider Deliverence their heaviest album (WIkipedia's words, not mine) and Heritage is, well... not.

OPETH
Midway: Deliverence
Today: Heritage

I guess Heritage but they're both seriously underwhelming.

Deliverance for certain.

Well this one was interesting. First Heritage was winning, then Deliverance, then a tie, then Heritage and finally a tie again. Was expecting a similar result to Rush's--the highest rated (Heritage) getting the least votes and lowest (Deliverance) getting most.

Deliverance. I can't get into Opeths new sound, not because it's not heavy, but because it lacks direction. Half of Heritage sounds like the band just tuning their instruments.

This. Opeth needs to stick with what they do best, which is "progressive death metal". Take away the growls, the double kicks, and the nuclear-powered riffs, and what's left is dry and uninteresting. The almost universal acclaim for Heritage and Damnation baffle me.

^Why one should 'stick' to one style, especially if this style's been played for 20 years?

They shouldn't, I agree. How many times can you do the same thing in a row before the band and fans get bored, even if done well? So I'm not knocking them for at least trying something new. But droning edgy prog rock is not something they do well, period. Steve Wilson has it nailed down. Not Opeth. I'm thinking maybe they should have split up a while ago and just tried to find new inspiration in different bands. Then again, I think 99% of bands are out of gas after 15 years at most...
