Robert Fripp

Jon Preston Bouda

Piotr Grudzinski

Mikael Åkerfeldt

Jonas Engdegård

Steve Hackett

Steve Howe

David Gilmour

Alex Lifeson

John Petrucci

Cool of you to mention Piotr Grudzinski! Cosmogenesis is probably the most accurate musical representation of a ride through space that I know of. Thumbs Up

Ha thank you! I really like his melodic approach to playing, particularly on Second Life Syndrome. He's the shining point on that album I always believed.

Yes, and very Gilmourish, don't you think?

At any rate, Riverside is definitely awesome.

I feel guilty that I left some good guitarists out from bands on this site, but I think Johnny Marr and The Edge are really good in the Alternative Rock genre.  Doesn't anyone else think there are good alternative rock guitarists?

Maybe, but they're playing alternative rock and thus have little opportunity to play anything good.

cstack! I like your choices, especially because you mentioned Al DiMeola while no one else here mentioned him, I went specifically looking for his name here, no one else mentioned him. I love him and Race with the Devil on a Spanish Highway is one of my ultimate favorite tracks! Bravo, hugs and again xxxxxxx

Hmm, true. He is awesome but so is everyone in GG, so I don't often single him out.

yes certainly but I don't know their names. The Editors - Back Room is one I would pick for great guitar work in that genre.

Yep as I said in my post Marr is one of the few guitarists I care about. Lovely playing and a real star on The Smiths albums.

Edge is great too but much more inconsistent. Unforgettable Fire has been my favorite release of theirs and the title track has great playing.

Very much so, yes! I never get tired of hearing those parts. Not a boring or uninspired one in the bunch, and that Gilmour influence is so prevalent in each one. Props to him for making it not sound derivative, too!
