Actually, I think the point I'd been trying to make was that I preferred the British bands overall than the U.S ones from the time. I wouldn't consider those bands BritPOP either. |

You may be correct..
Britpop is a subgenre of alternative rock that originated in the United Kingdom. Britpop emerged from the British independent music scene of the early 1990s and was characterised by bands influenced by British guitar pop music of the 1960s and 1970s. The movement developed as a reaction against various musical and cultural trends in the late 1980s and early 1990s, particularly the grunge phenomenon from the United States. In the wake of the musical invasion into the United Kingdom of American grunge bands, new British groups such as Suede and Blur launched the movement by positioning themselves as opposing musical forces, referencing British guitar music of the past and writing about uniquely British topics and concerns. These bands were soon joined by others including Oasis, The Verve, Pulp, Supergrass, Space, Sleeper and Elastica. |

Grunge, hands down. Soundgarden, Alice In Chains, Nirvana and hell, I'll even throw early STP in there, are some of my all time favorite bands. There's a lot more than just screaming and thrashing going on there, as much of the music is fairly complex (not so much in Nirvana's case, they were just catchy as all get out) and the lyrics were very thought provoking. And some of the most memorable songs I can think of.

I like Soundgarden and Melvins a lot, as well as STP (who I don't consider grunge, but I'll play along)... but I'm still giving it up for Britpop mainly because I really love Blur and really dislike Nirvana and Pearl Jam (though I confess I haven't heard a whole lot of the latter). Still, it's close.

What have you heard from Pearl Jam?

Just curious.......are there any Mansun fans here...? To me much of their first album fits in with Brit pop.

Definitely a big Mansun fan, good Dr, and easily their first album, and probably the third have plenty of Brit-pop moments throughout! Actually, there's plenty of bits on `Six' like that as well, stuff like `Being A Girl', etc.
Terrific band - great singer, sh*t-hot guitar player too. |

I just 'discovered' them recently....somehow I missed them when they were 'popular'.
I like Attack and Six....the last one is a little weak imo.
I'm surprised that Draper , or Chad, didn't go solo. |

I'm a big Mansun fan myself but not because of their debut which is ok but doesn't really do it for me, Six is more my thing.
For me it's definitely grunge/alternative rock or whatever you wanna call it. While the stuff coming out of the UK that time was good it didn't really made me to want to investigate the scene, and overall that time I was into more heavier sound which was something that the US bands were much more into, plus I really hated the hype around Oasis. But hey is anyone familiar with the early Seattle band My Sister's Machine? |

From what I understand, they were always something of an `underdog' band, certainly had a small but wildly devoted fanbase, fascinated by the cryptic nature of their lyrics and, well, they were a pretty good looking bunch of lads too! Good way to lure the girls in! At least once a year there's some mention of Draper working on a solo disc, or at least collaboratng with others, but from what I can tell nothing ever comes from it. Don't know about Chad, though, what a shame... The third album `Little Kix'....boy was I disappointed when it first came out. It seemsed so...straightforward after `Six', like the band had a massive panic attack and retreated back to something a little safer. I wonder if it was also record company pressure? It was like all the daring, the confidence and the defiance in the band to do things in their own unique way had vanished...but years later, I think I finally appreciate it as simply a collection of good tunes. |
