For most people not living in the US, I suspect this is fairly meaningless, but as a follower of foreign news I'm interested in the perspectives of Americans on the issue of Nevada cattle rancher Cliven Bundy.

Bundys family has been embroiled in a dispute with the federal government, specifically the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) for decades. The government claims that Bundys cattle is damaging the protected public land, for which Bundy has not paid for the use of. He has also not paid numetrous fines that have been slapped on him for years. Bundy claims the state owns the land, not the federal government and his family have been ranchers there since the 1880's, and have a right to use it for grazing. The federal government want to use the land for renewable energy projects - by all accounts - and are also concerned about the wellbeing of local wildlife; not a position taken by their Washington predecessors when they were regularly detonating atom bombs in the Nevada desert of course, but the world has changed...perhaps.

Washington Post: timeline of dispute

The dispute came to a head this week when armed BLM agents and police descended on Bundys locale and confiscated most of his cattle. The 'feds' were confronted with a large and angry mob of Bundy's supporters and after some deliberation for now at least have stood down and returned the cattle to Bundy. Senetor Harry Reid a key opponent to Bundys position, and an advocate of the BLMs action has said 'This is not over'

The situation could get very ugly if the BLM return more heavy handed. What is likely to happen next and does anyone have any sympathy for Bundys position in this?
Ultimately bored by endless ecstasy!

No. The situation won't get any ugly. It is just an idiot with a bunch of paranoid idiots with guns that have been turned into liberty heroes by right wing outlets. And the situation is much calmer now but outlets like Fox News continue to talk about it trying to make something out of it and even comparing this situation with what happened many years ago in Waco.

It's pretty clear that both sides of the media coverage are coming from a not-very-well-hidden agenda related to what's generally called "culture wars" these days. That said the conflict of interest seems to me as much rural vs. urban as conservatism vs. progressivism, but maybe I'm just more likely to view it that way because my own country's political landscape isn't as divided into two big camps as the United States' is.

It's just that the media both left and right has attached so much cultural baggage to the Cliven Bundy affair that I'm somewhat more certain of this blowing up somewhow. (figuratively, not literally)

No it will not.

Though Fox News surely it's trying.

Legally it doesn't seem like Cliven Bundy has a lot of leg to stand on in his dispute with the Bureau of Land Management.  He's been grazing his cattle on public land without paying the required fees for years, and has repeatedly had courts rule against him on this issue.

That said, there is a long and not so proud tradition in this country of some folks taking civil liberties pretty seriously, and clashing with government agencies that appear to be treading on them.  In particular freedom of speech, religion, right to assemble, right to privacy, self-defense, and due process.  Whether legtimitate or perceived, Bundy seems to have grievances involving several of these rights.

It's good to see the BLM backing off this at least for now, but I'm not sure I agree with T that this won't end up as another in a long string of deadly sieges in this country, ala Wounded Knee (1973), Medina, North Dakota (1983), the MOVE-9 in Philly (1985), Ruby Ridge (1992), Waco (1993), the Montana Freeman (1996), Republic of Texas (1997) or the YFZ Ranch in TX (2008).  All of these involved citizens with grievances against the government and where the government initiated some sort of action against the groups.  In every case someone went to jail, but in nearly every case people also died and in the aftermath of each one of these sieges there were findings of either excessive force, obstruction of justice, prosecutorial misconduct or false evidence being used on the part of federal, state and/or local governments.  I grew up in northern Montana and knew quite a few people like Bundy and the people supporting him (in fact a fair number of the ranchers who went to Nevada to stand up to the BLM are from Montana).  These people hold very strongly to their beliefs and I seriously doubt this is over, whether Fox "News" continues trying to stir the pot or not.  Some of these folks have been seething since Ruby Ridge and now they've had a taste of success by getting the BLM to back down.  I think this will embolden some of them to continue pushing and even to esclate tensions by getting involved in similar disputes elsewhere.  Personally I think it's going to be a long, hot summer out West.

It's obvious he's ignoring the law...period.
Others have been paying rental fees for grazing for many years (including a Republican Congressional female land owner in another state  so why should he be exempt? You don't hear the GOP mention her and others though and they make this guy out to be some kid of martyr. Typical GOP nonsense imo.

Now all the politicians and pundits who believe he was justified in his criminal activity, are wisely backing away to protect themselves for the mid-term elections.

This guy's story was puffed up from something locally ridiculous into something nationally embarrassing.

But now with his own notoriety, maybe he can get in contact with Phil Robertson from the duck family and start a bowling team. LOL

The Tea Party just cancelled a order for 10 million "Bundy for President" T-shirts. Apparently they ran out of cotton....
