Hi everyone, I know this is a hard request, but I'm looking for some recommendations on bands that have a sound similar, influenced by, or in the same vein of Sieges Even in the Steps / Sense of Change period. By this I mean, melodic vocals, jazzy drums / bass with lots of odd tempos and rhythmic changes, and guitars that are cleaner, melodic and with Rush / Allan Holdsworth influences. I don't mind heavier guitars, though.

Not asking for much, aren't I ? (yes)

Some of the bands I could find that fit my criteria were Soul Cages (all of their work), early works by Eldritch, Lemur Voice and Subsignal, of course.

I know Watchtower, Mekong Delta, Voivod and other bands in the technical trash metal genre, however, I'm looking for something softer, more melodic, like the two records I mentioned. I also know and love Psychotic Waltz, and know that they're often mentioned when Sieges is brought into conversation.

Well, thanks in advance, and keep progginng! Beer

Hello and welcome!

You have instantly become my new best friend Wink.

Very tough question, since you have ruled out Soul Cages already. Try Xerxes from the same period, nice stuff.
Now more Rush-like are Tiles of course, but not similar style; you could check Presents of Mind.

I will return if I can think of something else!

Hi appatsos, thank you for the warm welcome! I'm already listening to Xerxes! Sounds awesome!

I had a recommendation for a german band called Scaffold, album Eerie Circles (1993). I haven't listened to it yet, but it shows some potential, you might want to look for it. I will let you know in case I find other similar gems. I will also listen to Tiles, I've heard a lot about them but haven't given them a spin :)

Hi Rivertree, thank you, I will check the Toxic Smile's 7 after I finish Xerxes :D

Sieges Even is killer, there is little like them. Enchant is kind of Rush like, but not jazzy.

Well, the poster asked for something melodic & jazzy, mixed with hard rock, and  I posted that song by Alice Cooper.
Maybe this one fits better.

^I suggest you go listen to Sieges Even again Svet, that Jeff Beck track is cool but nothing like them.

How about Zero Hour, notably heavier but very much in the vein of Sieges Even. Their last album Dark Deceiver is my favourite but The Towers of Avarice and  Specs of Pictures Burnt Beyond are both good albums as well.

Oh, okay. I agree.. Hey, what about Sithu Aye & Plini? it's a heavy, jazzy and melodic contemporary stuff.

Hawkeye_Maverick,

Did you try Arno Menses and Markus Steffan's post Sieges Even Band Subsignal?  I do not think the rythym section is good but I liked some of their songs.

To hope the road is long
Last light of summer
Rain is the most beautiful color

...were all good songs.

I forgot Annon Vin "A New Gate". Their guitar player was with Mekong Delta on the "Wanderer" album. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yJBJ5L-SVBs

Fredrik Thordendal's Special Defects Sol Niger Within

A beautiful jazzy drumming and magnificent fusion-like guitar work.
