Topic: Richard Thompson vs Fairport Convention Posted: April 30 2014 at 06:32 |
Solo artist vs his band. Guitarist of classical band who recorded many albums in similar style. As for me Richard Thompson's albums are many more energetic and Thompson himself shows more talent as solo artist.

Richard Thompson for me; much more stylistic variation. Thompson is also a brilliant guitarist.

Gotta go with Fairport overall... even though I'm a fan of Thompson's solo output.

He is a very good guitarist but not quite in the very top class for me.
I prefer Fairport as a band to his solo output.

Overall, Fairport, possibly because I can include Thompson in it to some degree. It is a close call. I have seen both live and each provides excellent performances. Having learned something of fingerpicking over the last few years I can definitely say Thompson's guitar work is first-rate.

Fairport has some pleasant music but they are pretty boring. Thompson is boring without being particularly pleasant.

RICHARD THOMPSON IS GOD. Fairport were good but have been dismal for well over 40 years.
Me, as a complete RT freak, this poll is a no brainer.
The only time Fairport were any good was when Thompson was with them i.e. 1967-1970.
After that, Fairport have been nothing short of mediocre to ordinary.
Richard Thompson solo albums on the other hand from 1982 onwards IMHO match and better any recording artist on this planet.
Go and buy and listen to this absolute genius guitarist, songwriter. HIs name is dull but his artistry is beyond description.

Fairport with Thompson, but also with Sandy Denny. Unhalfbricking and Liege & Lief are fantastic albums.

Superb album......def their best imo.
I really like Thompson's early work with his ex wife and then his next 4 or 5 solo albums.....he lost me with his middle period albums and much of his newer work though there are gems on all of his albums and his guitar work is always excellent.

Yes...it's interesting that Fairport is listed here as 'prog related ' yet Thompson is not. His solo albums are easily as folk/proggy as the Fairport stuff.

I saw Richard Thompson in concert in 1986 when he was in a major misogynist stage. Never been able to warm up to him since, although I've seen him live a few times since and kind of enjoy his music, enough to sit through a concert anyway, but with no great enthusiasm. I've seen Fairport live probably 8-10 times. My husband and I are both major fans, we always describe Fairport as the soundtrack to our marriage. So FC all the way!

Just listen, as I just did, to the latest releases from both and surely you must come to the conclusion that Thompson is still producing albums that are a pleasure to own and listen to. I confess I don't know all of Thompson's later work but Still is a mighty fine album, though it must be admitted that having Jeff Tweedy producing has not hurt.
Otoh, FP's latest offering is pretty iffy. Simon Nicol's voice is a wee bit too poppy for my tastes and the songwriting is somewhat devoid of any real spark. It is well played, it is well produced and some of it is pretty damn good but compared to their work back in their heyday it doesn't really make the grade.
FP in their prime were absoutely top notch and maybe live they can still pass muster but their prime is an awful long time ago now. While Thompson may not be coming up with this year's Vincent Black Lightning he is at least still relevent.
btw .... Dr Wu, I'd have thought that FP made it into Folk/Prog on the shirt tails of Babbacombe Lee, which is post Thompson. Solo wise, I really don't think Thompson has any Prog cred, no matter how good some of his work is.

I agree RT is way ahead on recent stuff, while FC are cruising on past glories. They still sound nice in concert, however.

Wouldn't surprise me in the least. Those guys are seriously talented musos with more than a modicum of experience to back up the talent. what they need to do is record a live album. Because I enjoyed Still so much I'm now listening to the Buddy Miller produced Electric. Nice.

I've been to the Cropredy festival a few times in the past five years, and really enjoyed hearing FC live. They still have it, especially Rick Saunders.

Not having been to the Festival I can only comment from its reputation but surely a double live album would be an absolute belter.
