There's definitely some growling/grunting I don't like (like both Cannibal Corpse vocalists, sorta iffy on The Faceless's vocalist, many vocalists in 'core' subgenres that use growls) but if they've got a unique tone or technique, I like it very much. Possibly my favourite growling vocalist ever, Simon Gerard of Beyond Creation, can do a lot more than just sound evil--he can hold notes for a dastardly long time (check out the end of The Deported!), can also shriek very well (sounds like they have two vocalists when he switches between growls and shrieks) and has the ability to vibrate notes so that it sounds like he's growl-purring or something (I forget which song that's on, though). LOL

Yes to growls, no to grunts.

^ growl purring - as if anyone needed reminding they're on Prog Archives LOL I don't own a lot of music that employs so-called growling but as far as wanting to sound evil, inhuman or otherworldly is concerned, wouldn't effectively chosen lyrics go a long way towards conveying that intention? Even I think you are a shimmering vision of loveliness, here have a biscuit Amanda when growled is gonna sound diabolical and would completely contradict the desired message. I'm haunted by images of insurance underwriters and bank clerks pretending to be Satanic fiends from tatty bedsits when I hear some growling (but that's just me)

Nowadays, when I need me some hard rock, it's usually the death or black type, and of course it involves growling or shrieking.

If I'm being honest I always took growling ~ and I mean the early stuff like Exodus' first record which these days probably sounds like whispering ~ to be a solution for bands who couldn't find what many can't: a good singer.   Growling eventually became a stylistic option, but back then it sounded like a desperate need to vocalize even if you weren't Ronnie James.

In general I guess I lean more toward dislike more than like, but I don't mind a lot of it; as long as the rest of the music is good I can dig it (maudlin of the Well for example).

Growling is fine for animals , and sometimes during sex.

In defense of a good growl, if it is used well, it is used in full acknowledgement of its connotations. In Bath and Leaving Your Body Map, for instance, maudlin of the Well uses growling to evoke the dangerous aspects of a surreal dreamscape. It's a little scary and impersonal, but also thrilling. In the right context, this can be a magic combination of elements.

If someone growled at me in a conversation they would get slapped down. I don' t  feel that there is a place for growling outside of a dog kennel. But that's just me. I'm silly like that.

The conversation would probably continue, because everyone talks during bass solos.
