I guess this is the appropriate place for this inquiry

Has it ever been discussed if PA should expand their top 250 albums to a larger list?

I for one would love to see it expanded to be the top 1000 albums at least

Just wondrin'

yeah, i think top 500 should be better imo, however, there might be some other discussion(s) about this somewhere else i believe.

...anyway.

Many moons ago the search algorithm used to be able to show the top 500

I suspect that this put a lot of extra demand on the Servers and was detrimental to site performance (erm, in English: it was too slow).

What?

Interesting to see the positions on that list. Obviously an attempt from the sites infancy

I don't think it's appropriate to have a top 1000 (or 500) and this is the reason

Why does that make it inappropriate?

I have no idea but it would be a very long web page.

He's saying that only 75ish albums have over 1000 ratings. Extrapolating from this, pushing the list to 500 would probably give pretty bad results as the albums on the back half wouldn't have many ratings and would probably be pointless to list.

It doesn't seem to affect the TOP 100 Little Known But Highly Rated Studio Albums of All Time
All have very few ratings. Same goes when filtering for subgenres

As far as loading the entire page and it not happening fast enough, simply break each page into 100 albums each

None of this is so serious that the results are a matter of life and death, i just like to get a general view. It's all subjective anyway

I would like to see a top 1000 list but I'm guessing it would become pretty inaccurate towards the end. Glad to see a thread for it though. One thing I've always wanted to see just out of curiosity is a bottom 100 list. Anyone have any idea what we be number 1 on that (In The Hot Seat maybe)? Just a thought

One time I asked a similar question and someone directed me to this:

http://www.progarchives.com/album.asp?id=16857

Some well written reviews on that page, too.

Think I heard that a while back, it's pretty horrendous LOL The worst rating I've found is probably this TD album of covers. Really out of character...

The posts saying that the rankings would be less meaningful toward the end of a top 500 are right.
Even just under the top 100, I recently found Unfolded Like Staircase sitting at #109. I gave it a five-star review, and it instantly rose up to #102. The album does only have 292 ratings currently, but this evidence is enough to show how the rankings 251-500 might not be so meaningful. You'll rate an album, and its ranking will change by no less than thirty spots. LOL

When Progarchives first started out there was a top 500. Then at some point maybe around 2006 or so it got condensed to a top 250. I vote for a top 500 again also. :)
