Only proto-prog I'm afraid, but The Beatles "Birthday" is great.

How about the song Birthday Boy, from The Residents album Duck Stab/Buster & Glen? Not exactly Prog (and gender specific, which might not work for you), but it'll be the hit of the party, guaranteed...

Well, besides "The Magician's Birthday" (already mentioned) ...
the only other I can think of is "The Happy Birthday Song" by Andrew Bird (from "The Mysterious Production of Eggs"). Starts kind of low-key, but picks up a little into the song. I know Andrew Bird isn't listed on this site, but after hearing most of the mentioned album, I think he should be--at least "Prog Related" or "Crossover".

I see that SteveG already inquired about the Beatles 'Birthday' so although I did already, I won't again. The other choice that comes to mind isn't overly proggy and possibly too specific, but on George Harrison's excellent album 'All Things Must Pass' there's a 20 second track called 'It's Johnny's Birthday' which is fun, and stretching it a little, the name Johnny can hypothetically be used as a generic name for a person (friend) and it leads directly into a instrumental jam called 'Plug Me In', which isn't exactly proggy either but it does kick a little. Hope it helps some. Take care.

I just got The Devin Townsend album "Terria", and in the song "Earth Day" it repeats several time the frase "It's you Birthday, it's on Earth Day"... however, it's not particularly a birthday song, at least as far as I understand, and it's got it's darker twists, having shortly after the line "It's your worst f*****g day". However, it's a really cool song.

I'm pretty sure you'll have a hard time beating sending that middle section from "Magician's Birthday" by Uriah Heep.

Actually, the birthday part is the one I don't like from that song (it's perhaps the part I dislike the most from the whole album, otherwise it's a very nice album). |

There's a song played live by King Crimson called "Happy Birthday", it's just creepy Fripp's soundscapes with Belew singing "Happy Birthday" like he's super stoned, pretty scarry & funny. Here is the link of the live album on DGM live, though I cannot find it to listen in streaming for free on the Internet sorry...

On top of that, bonus disc of Epicloud, there's "Happy Birthday". Probably my favorite 'birthday' song. Beautiful song with Anneke on vocals.
