Topic: Did Steve Wilson create a new genre? Posted: July 12 2014 at 08:51 |
Over the last few months I've found quite a few bands who have been reviewed as sounding like Porcupine Tree. I've checked some of them out and find it true. Knowing that "Neo-Prog" is for the most part based on the sound of Gabriel era Genesis and to a lesser degree Yes, is it fair to say Steve has created a new genre? What would such a genre be called?
My submission is:
Nu-Porcu Prog

i was asking myself the same question, yesterday listening to PT Fear of a black... I couldn't find anything before him that sounds like PT. Mr. Wilson would be proud, knowing his hate for the Neo-Prog genre. But i wouldn't go as far as saying that he has created a new genre. Maybe PT has crafted something new with something old from different genre of music.

Fear of a Blank Planet is IMO: progressive metal + dream pop + Tool the dream pop part gives it the cold edge but it's not a new genre. Like all of the Porcupine Tree output, they took something from other genres and mixed it with our standard prog.

I don't think he 'created' anything 'new', but he certainly bumped existing forms up a notch or two.

He came kinda close with the original mix of 'Up the Downstair' with his unique mesh of IDM, 90s neopsychedelic electronica and pure high soaring space rock. Another example of this "new genre" (haha!) is found on the original 30+ version of Sky Moves Sideways. What a tune!

This. Also, silly genre name in OP aside, couldn't PT arguably have started what's known as 'nu-prog' (while being 100x better than the rest of it)? Mainly with their later sound.

That's exactly what he wants you to think, but it's all just moody, watered-down parts of other genres put together for a whole that is ideal for being over-rated

I hate how everything has to be a part of some genre, and if it desn't fit any, no harm done we'll make something up! The need to categorise is just inescapable

Definitely not create, but I'd defend the case for the Porcupine Tree sound circa 1996-2005 strongly help shaping Crossover Prog.
