Why? Besides, that does not automatically make it stupid and does not call for destructive, overly critical feedback for how your fellow progheads get their hands on music.

^^I'm sorry but you're wrong. Phones are now for music. Lamps are for making phone calls. And CD Players are for lighting up dark rooms. Get with the times. This is 2014, not the 12th century.

I can understand your anger at me, but what did the horse I rode in on ever do to you?

Bringing your vinyls and hi-fi system on airplanes can get cumbersome.

A lot of today's music wouldn't make it through airport security anyway.

Did this in the 90s, feel no compulsion to return to it.

Wow, you're silly.

I want to be HUMAN,Pat. I don't do things that are hip, trendy or fashionable such as listen to music on my phone(pretty soon phones will also replace human brains and I will refuse them to the fullest). My phone is for phone calls and text messages and that's that. If I'm silly then silly me up

Well the phone has a built in MP3 player.  There is no reason to carry both.  I only have 8GB on my phone, but that is enough for me to keep serveral albums at 320Kbps.  This is my first smart phone, and I immediately sold my mp3 player.

I'm glad I'm old.

I actually bought my current 'phone specifically to store and listen to music on, indeed Nokia went to a lot of trouble to marketed the device as such and the word "music" even forms part of the product-name. I thought that if I have to carry around a useless piece of tech so my friends and family can contact me whenever it suits them then it may as well serve some useful function the rest of the time. Being a music fan far more than I am someone who feels the constant need to talk (or text) another human, a 'phone that could also store and play music seemed the ideal gadget for me. In that respect I intend to regard it as a portable media player that was also capable of receiving (very very occasionally sending) telephonic communication.

Unfortunately we haven't quite reached the stage in battery technology development that is commensurate with the vast range of practical uses a mobile cellular telephonic transmitter/receiver unit is expected to provide. Battery life being what it is means I still have to lug-around a separate MP3-player, camera and ebook-reader.

When the future eventually gets here it's going to be bloody fantastic.
What?

I'm shocked at the amount of people that stream or download compressed digital music files in general.
Another music store bit the dust in my area once again
CD or FLAC is always prefereable,  BUT Lossless formats are not always cheap.  I buy many digital downloads, and the sound quality is very good.  Very high quality lossy satisfies most people that listen on their phone, car, or computer.  I have an excellent stereo, but I rarely use it these days.  My only request is that all digital download stores offer a Lossless format, because I do not need the plastic.

Well it sounds to me if you really had a stellar stereo set up you would be opting for the plastic.
Anyway. I think your right about some of these lossy codecs. I'm starting to come around. FLAC and for surround sound purposes Dolby AC3 mix sound quite pleasing to my ears with my gear.
For instance I ran Jethro Tull's A Passion Play boxset from Steven Wilson, who offers a plethora of audio formats to choose from and I have to say that the Dolby AC3 was not bad. Instruments sounded very realistic and their wasn't any compression I could detect. Anyway. That's with the home theater. Lets talk about your phone. My only advice is to invest in a portable DAC to pair with your phone. You will be amazed how much life you will give to your music files, especially since most portable DAC's carry a built in amplifier. You can support headphones that have an impedance range anywhere from 32ohms to 600ohms. I highly recommend the FiiO E 17 DAC/amp. It's incredible for the money sitting around 150$. Long story short. Getting quality headphones and this DAC with a decent copper cable interconnect will make your portable music listening experience ethereal.

One problem though. You'll never want to listen to your music in a straight pure digital signal again.
Add a few 1's and 0's to those ears of yours. Analog is a wonderful difference.
Try it. You won't be sorry.

Happy listening.
Gimmie my headphones now!!! 🎧🤣

320kps refers more to the size of the file, not the frequency range.
Just do 24/192khz. It's the same quality in terms of resolution (bit depth and frequency range)
And you'll save on space. 8gigs is not a lot of room if your choosing 320kps.
It's a waste of space.

320kps loses the least amount of sound quality to the compression.  If I wanted to save disk space, I would choose the extreme variable bit rate.  I still want the best sound quality that I can get.
