Topic: Mike Rutherford ballads Posted: July 27 2014 at 01:06 |
Both these songs I personally think fit just right with their respective albums. I give the nod to Ripples for having some of the best lyrics of any Genesis song for me. Your Own Special Way fits Wind and Wuthering's somber tone well I feel, and I feel it's a fairly underrated song on a spectacular album.

Very easy choice for me - Ripples. Great song that has a lovely build up.
Whereas Your own Special Way really doesn't work for me far too limp especially after the first two great, opening songs on W&W.
It has been mentioned before but it is a shame (IMHO) that YOSW and All in a mouses night were not replace by a couple of tracks off the Spot the Pigeon EP - making a strong album even better.
Anyway out of these 2 songs, Ripples by an ocean.

Of course it's going to be Ripples. ........ not saying Special Way is weak though, I really love Phil's harmonies on this track.

I don't dislike Your Own Special Way. W&W is an odd album to me and suggests that things were not all that harmonious in the band at the time.
Ripples is a classic however (and ATOTT is my favourite Genesis album)

Your Own Special Way just about beats Ripples. Actually one of my favourites on W&W. Both are brilliant, and the chords on Ripples are so great

I used to like them once. Now they just irritate me overlong pop tunes. They both should be about 3.5 mins long and be proper honest pop tunes and not drag on for eternity.

Your Own Special Way drones on about 3 minutes too long. Editing would have tightened up a good ballad.

Agree---and comparing a popish song to a real prog song like Ripples is an easy vote.

Went with Ripples but I think the ballads that Genesis did were always a bit weak and not the crux of what Genesis were all about....

Love both tracks but Ripples is a masterpiece.
In any case, Ripples is not an exclusive Rutherford song. He wrote the lyrics and probably the melody line and surely the acoustic motive, but the instrumental interlude I think it is mainly Banks.

Ripples is an incredible song. Your Own Special Way goes on too long. Ripples it is.
