I'm so happy to be back to this forum. I've been sick, in the hospital and out again for several years and miss this site more than any other. I'm glad I remembered my login. Progressive music, esp. RIP, symphonic and other various forms helped get me through my continuing ordeal sooo much. Music is a gift from God and I don't know what I would have done without my beloved prog. It got me through some very dark times and continues to help. I really missed the new releases in the past few years and am very interested in new RIP and they call it "Eclectic"?, prog now. Bands like King Crimson, Ange, Anekdoten, Le Orme, P.F.M., Pink Floyd, Eloy, Riverside, Fates Warning, Peter Gabriel led Genesis, and Banco etc. are fav's. Please give me some recommendations. I'm going on a buying frenzy. This site introduced me to so many bands across the globe. Bravo to Prog Archives.

2014 has been a great year for prog so far. If you are in the mood for new discoverys, I recommend Perfect Beings, Dream The Electric Sleep, Anubis. Oldies but goodies - Umphrey's McGee, Curved Air, Darryl Way, Ian Anderson, Eno - Hyde...

Much thanks for the welcome backs and rec's. Yes, quite an experience and I'm still paralyzed in my left foot but enough depressing talk. Let's talk prog. I love my prog-metal but am looking more for R.I.P. and the new subgenre, to me, eclectic prog. Last time here King Crimson were in the art rock subgenre. Us proger's are very cerebral minded, so I like all the new subgenre's and relate to how picky we are. More studying for me to do. I'm a die hard R.I.P. fan and heard a lot a very good bands from Italy came out in 2003. I'm definitely getting Wilson's last two releases The Raven that Refused to Sing and Grace for Drowning. I'm a big fan of Porcupine Tree. I'm checking out the suggestion's, much thanks. Peace and keep them coming.

Welcome back!
I was once hospitalized for a month. I absolutely hated it. Going in and out of hospital for years … I cannot even begin to imagine how it’s like. Sorry to hear about your left foot, but I really hope you’re well enough to enjoy life and music to the full. As for eclectic prog, you could try Van der Graaf Generator and Gentle Giant – given that you don’t know them already (old stuff but you didn’t mention them). |

Welcome back and all my best wishes for your health! I have been sick for 2 years too (still recovering but better now) and it's s*t. The search function of PA's Top Albums with genre and year selection should help you find great albums from recent years in the sub-genres you like. I'm not buying much new Prog lately but some great findings in the last years have been:
Glass Hammer: IF Big Big Train: The Underfall Yard Simon Says: Tardigrade Anglagard: Viljans Oga Citizen Cain: Skies Darken Keith Emerson with Marc Bonilla IQ: Frequency Moon Safari: Blomljud Wobbler: Rates of Dawn

To paraphrase one of MY favorite bands..."Welcome Back my Friend to the Site That Never Ends"
While I can't say I've been through what you seem to have been through, I have had a health scare it gives you certain perspective on life that you might not otherwise experience. Music can be a powerful ally at these moments. Here's a few suggestions to get started: Moth Vellum - Moth Vellum Nexus - Aire Haken - Aquarius Druckfarben - Second Sound Ian Anderson - Homo Erraticus |

Welcome back! Glad to hear you're recovering - sounds pretty awful, but I'm glad prog rock can help get you through it.
Lots of great albums already been mentioned but Haken's "The Mountain" is probably one of my favourites from the decade so far that's down your street (along with "Aquarius" and "Visions"). Rush's "Clockwork Angels" and the newer Dream Theater albums are things you might also like. There's tons of stuff out there recently released (Echolyn, IQ, Anglagard, Swans, Flower Kings, Astra, Willowglass, Gazpacho, Distorted Harmony, Motorpsycho, Opeth) but Iamthemorning's debut is my favourite. It's called "~", possibly not your style (progressive chamber folk) but worth a listen. Plus they're releasing another one this summer if you like that. Hope you get better man!

Welcome back and good luck on your recovery!! +1 for Van Der Graaf Generator, my favorite from the eclectic genre.
Pawn Hearts, GodBluff, Still Life and H to He Who Am the Only One are considered the essentials, however, frontman Peter Hammill has released solo albums pretty much consistently since 1970 I think, and some of them are better than some of the material he released with VDGG, I highly recommend Peter Hammill's "Over" and "The Silent Corner and the Empty Stage". I'd say Over, Still Life, Silent Corner, and Pawn Hearts are my favorite things the man has released. Also, if you're wanting to get more into the heavier side of prog, and you enjoy eclectic, or experimental music. You've gotta check out Devin Townsend's solo career, once the frontman for Strapping Young Lad, the guy really came into his own when he started releasing his own material, he can do the harsh vocal style, or growling, perfectly, but usually just straight up sings, how the man has mastered two polarizing styles so well is beyond me, high notes, low notes, shrieks, Devin does it all, and he is absolutely a virtuoso at the guitar, he has covered tons of different styles in his career, but I'd say my three favorite are, Ocean Machine, Terria, and Synchestra. There ya go, and once again, welcome back to PA.
