For me, Royal Scam is above all, so an initial vote goes for that one.

My favourite songs from each album are Rikki Don't Lose That Number, Doctor Wu, Caves of Altamira, Aja and West of Hollywood

Take Two Against nature off that list and put Countdown on and you might have a proper list.

I bought Katy Lied first so although it's not going to be top of most lists, it is on mine.

Royal Scam is their best IMO.  Aja and Countdown next, Then Pretzel and Gaucho, with Katy and Thrill bringing up the rear.

I feel like Fred Capossela.

Royal Scam and/or Aja. Either one could be # 1 for me on any given day. Pretzel Logic has some of my favorites SD songs but the album overall doesn't do it for me like RS or Aja

Katy Lied, Aja and Can't Buy a Thrill are pretty much equal first for me, and since Katy Lied had no votes, I went with that. Smile

my fav Steely Dan album is not here, as an easy choice for me would be Countdown To Ecstasy, so no vote, anyway my second fav album from them must be Royal Scam

I just voted Katy...it has always been my favorite and I've been into the Dan from day one.

Nice. I've grown up with the Dan from day one, not quite the same, but an equally cool experience. Thanks mum and dad. LOLApprove
I wonder why it seems that Katy Lied often falls in to the bottom lot of their 70's output. A tad more poppy? I dunno.

Love all the classics from that list.  Tough to choose between Royal Scam and Aja but ultimately voted for the latter.

Aja.

When he rides, my fears subside.
For darkness turns once more to light.
Through the skies, his white horse flies.
To find a land beyond the night.

Aja, then Can't Buy a Thrill because it's one of the very few vinyls I have that all three of my sons like too.

I don't think it's more poppy since there is plenty of that on all the first 4 albums...Royal Scam had some boring tracks for me and Aja is all about the jazz influence and studio techniques and sidemen  which Becker and Fagen became obsessed with...though it's a brilliant album of course. I thought Gaucho was essentially Aja part 2 with less brilliant songs.
Not sure why but Katy Lied just always appealed to me a little more than the others. For me it had the right mixture of rock, jazz , and pop.

Yeah, The Royal Scam is probably my least favourite of their 70's albums. The title track in particular being the weakest they'd put out up to that point IMO. Still a good album though. I agree with Gaucho being Aja part 2 but not quite as good.
