Listened to most material by Van Der Graaf Generator but heard only very little by Radiohead.  However, from what I did hear, I’d conclude that Radiohead is not in the same league as VDGG.

Interesting.  Although I like both bands OK enough, they are both similar to me in one aspect that VDGG is one of my least favorite from the classic era, and Radiohead is one of my least favorite from the modern era.  This being said, I think that head to head my vote will have to go to VDGG.

Graaf
Radio
All I like is prog related bands beginning late 60's/early 70's. Their music from 1968 - 83 has the composition and sound which will never be beaten. Perfect blend of jazz, classical, folk and rock.

I don't like either band.

I'll go with Graaf here. Though i enjoy my doses of Kid A as much as any other VdGG recordd.

I haven't casted a vote as yet, but I can tell that the already established VDGG will take the trophy.
..........and I agree.........
Next up - Peter Hammill vs. Thom Yorke........
Thom is modern, Pete is old-school ( with more than enough intelligence for current affairs....)

I do respect VDGG for their influence on prog and on rock music in general but for my listening pleasure, I prefer Radiohead, quite comfortably.

I really like Radiohead, but Graaf is probably my favorite classic prog group.. maybe. Either way, VDGG

I have heard some VdGG moments that are ok. The vocals from both .... is why the prog god invented instrumental music. I've tried hard but... some moments of Pawn Hearts... a few bits from Kid A so long as they are the moments blatantly derived from R.I.O. music which no one in the mainstream knows about ... but ... neither really.

Always thought VdGG needed someone hot in the guitar department (guitar fan here). And Radiohead need the same. I suppose in many ways Radiohead could be a new VdGG...

VGG with flying colors for me.

Radiohead just never did it for me, personally.

Van der Graaf Generator.

When he rides, my fears subside.
For darkness turns once more to light.
Through the skies, his white horse flies.
To find a land beyond the night.
