Jack O The Clock - really interesting complex layered folky 'stuff'
Atomic Ape - from the West Coast SC3 family of bands, heavy, middle eastern soundtrack stuff
Karenautas - Argentinian Chamber Rock
Janel & Anthony - Guitar & Cello instrumental
MoeTar - avant pop with a hell of a vocalist
Sonar - minimalist heavy rock
Corima - Koenjiyakkei style zeuhl
Rhun - modern French Zeuhl

Great post.  Need to checkout the chamber rock and Corima.

Of those already mentioned I am a big fan of Knifeworld and Dream The Electric Sleep.
Some that haven't been mentioned yet -
The Tea Club
Anubis
Perfect Beings
The Samuel Jackson Five
Herd Of Instinct
I know I'm probably leaving out some, how far back can you go and be considered new? Big smile

Released date are often when it it impacted you but recorded dates are when it really happened...

Imo there can not be one "THE best" band because there is a variety of styles (sub-genres).

I've been listening to quite a bit of Gazpacho lately. They've got some cool stuff, including their new album Demon.

Discovered 2 excellent bands over the weekend at Summers End in Verbal Delirium and Frequency Drift, both are excellent live and their albums are proving just as good.

I've been really looking for new/current progressive rocks bands, as well. The problem I'm running into is ... so many of them are progressive metal. And, I've really lost my ear for metal. I loved it when I was younger. But, for some reason, I really can't stand it any more.

I'm checking out the bands listed here as I can. Besides Sound of Contact, I'm having a hard time finding bands that click with me.

I'm quite partial to this band called The Vicious Head Society. Some guy from Ireland ;)

But seriously, they are not a new band but the latest Fates Warning album is amazing imo.

Gazpacho and iamthemorning mentioned above blew my mind last year. "Demon" and "Belighted" and totally stunning, can't get enough of them.
