Fairport......due to Sandy Denny and Richard Thompson.

I never post anything anywhere without doing more than basic research, often in depth.

Fairport 1967-1970 were superb. Pentangle were also brilliant. Hmmmm yep early Fairport wins.

Another poll would be Sandy Denny vs Jacqui McShee. That would be a tough one as both had voices from heaven.

I don't find myself qualified to vote as I'm not very familiar with their works, even though I do listen to a good dose of Brit folk rock every now and then.

In that case I would vote for Sandy because of her writing skills.

Pentangle.

When he rides, my fears subside.
For darkness turns once more to light.
Through the skies, his white horse flies.
To find a land beyond the night.

I just wish we could get more "progressive" folks to listen to Richard Thompson in Fairport Convention. It kinda defines the word "progressive", in how different and stylish he is all around.

And "Reynardine" is one of the prettiest things EVER recorded in rock music! Just a shame that we can't even hear it and not be cynical about it, and say it's not progressive. The presentation is so progressive as to be totally alien and out of this world!

However, it is likely that Pentangle would have had a larger influence in the folk circles for its creativity and difference. By comparison, FC almost fits into the folk-rock revival in the 70's a lot more than Pentangle that was around way before that!

Music is not just for listening ... it is for LIVING ... you got to feel it to know what's it about! Not being told!

Hey, Mosh, you and I actually agree on something! Thompson with Fairport was superb.

I will have to disagree in part regarding "Reynardine", however. It is perilous, not pretty. The song is an old folktale regarding a "were-fox" who lures a maiden to her death. When Sandy Denny sings the words "his teeth did brightly shine", I still get chills from her sinister intonation.
...a vigorous circular motion hitherto unknown to the people of this area, but destined
to take the place of the mud shark in your mythology...

Find the studio recordings of Pentangle a little sterile. Much prefer their live material.

Two great folksters but I gotta go with Fairport all the way, especially when Sandy Denny, Richard Thompson, AND Dave Swarbrick were in the band.
The world of sound is certainly capable of infinite variety and, were our sense developed, of infinite extensions. -- George Santayana, "The Sense of Beauty"
