Colour me surprised!....in a good way though. I really dig this one, and it was practically soundtrack to a certain time and place in my life, where I spent most of the week getting wasted and dancing in peculiar places. Oh the joys of reading philosophy and partaking in raves on the side.

SCORPIONS - "Fly to the Rainbow" (1974)

Group's second album but the new lineup's debut.  Ulrich (aka Uli Jon) Roth comes on like the new Hendrix - crazy harmonics and divebombs all over the place, flawless technique with both his tone and his speed.  Jurgen Rosenthal (who only played on this album before joining Eloy) is possibly the speediest drummer they ever had (Speedy's Coming!).  The band still has a few irons in the prog rock fire at this point, with relatively complex, multi-part songs occupying at least half the album.  This is also one of the few places you'll hear Rudy Schenker singing lead (on "We Need a Million"); Roth also sings lead on his first composition for the band, the delightfully heavy epic "Drifting Sun".  But "Speedy's Coming" proved to point towards the formula of the future - a rockin' riff machine with pop hooks and short duration (3 1/2 minutes).  Schenker would author many more classic power chord riffs in the next decade.

SCORPIONS - "In Trance" (1975)

The Roth lineup really hits its stride here, and Roth himself emerges as the dominant band member.  He opens up the album with the unhinged adrenaline blast of "Dark Lady", which makes the last album's "Speedy's Coming" sound like easy listening music.  Rudolf Schenker and Klaus Meine deliver the first of many classic power ballads in the title track, setting the stage for later triumphs like "We'll Burn the Sky" and even "Still Loving You".  Schenker's riff machine pumps out more instantly recognizable guitar riffs in "Top of the Bill" and "Robot Man" (the latter seems almost proto-new wave to me, but I'm probably alone in this), as well as a masterfully melodic and tight piece called "Longing for Fire" which displays their subtle touch as composers.  Roth nearly steals the show towards the end of the album with the Hendrix-like blues extravaganza "Sun in my Hand", complete with multi-tracked guitar solo that will blow your mind, man.

ERIC BURDON and WAR - "The Black Man's Burdon" (1970)

Great double album of jam-happy rock-jazz-blues-soul music, with an extremely tight yet spontaneous backing group (War) that went on to fame and fortune of their own.

I must admit I am not really much of a fan of Zappa.  I own a handful of his albums but can't say that before I started through his entire studio discography that I liked much of his work.  His humor clashes with mine so that is kind of a negative for me.  That being said I am enjoying much of his work this first time through; especially the instrumental albums.
