Thantifaxath - Sacred White Noise. Very ambitious black metal with an unusually intense kind of "angular" riffing style. Combined with the complex song structures and dystopian atmosphere, I kinda wonder if they've been inspired by their countrymen in Voivod.

PAVEMENT - "Wowee Zowee (Sordid Sentinels Edition)" (1995)

2 disc deluxe edition of the classic 90s indie rock album.  What is it about this band? It took me so long to acquire the taste, but once I did, I was hooked.

I was thinking about, and decided the special nature of their sound is similar to a garage band just messing around, making up songs on the spot.  Lots of bands do this, and maybe for one minute out of an entire hour, something really cool and inspired comes out, some weird chord change out of nowhere, some crazy guitar lead, all that stuff, that will never be duplicated.  Pavement sounds like that one minute ALL THE TIME.  And they write stuff that way, and can play it the same way every time, but it always sounds like a really inspired moment of making it up on the spot.  Uncanny!

It's amazing how much high quality black metal's coming out of Canada right now. This is of a much more naturalistic and introverted character than the other band I posted, not as much aggressive as melancholic and romantic. Incorporates quite a bit of not just post-rock influence, as is commonplace for that kind of BM, but also traditional French-Canadian music which makes for a very interesting aesthetic.
