Never listened to Pavement precisely because of the "poor man's The Fall" reputation.

They were certainly heavily influenced by The Fall, but even their first album doesn't have that many Fall sound-alike songs. And I don't think Wowee-Zowee has any at all.

Yeah, they're pretty different after their very early stuff. Stephen Malkmus is even better a lyricist than MES imo, although I like The Fall better in general.
I was making the connection to The Fall btw, because of the similar way most people don't quite get them at first, but find them addicting eventually. Forgot to mention that. Edited by Polymorphia - December 22 2014 at 12:47 |

Anyway, for me now it's:
Iceage– New Brigade I would recommend this band to fans of punk and post-punk. Their first album New Brigade is a noisy fusion of goth rock and hardcore punk. It's actually on Youtube for those interested (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YTm1XJe-TZE). Their second, 2013's You're Nothing, ups the hardcore influences and punches out even better, more emotive songs with better production. Both these albums clock in under 30 minutes. Their most recent is this year's circa-45-minute Plowing Into the Field of Love, which features vocals and lyrics (very good ones) prominently, while the band mixes in the country twang of Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds and the threat of near-collapse of the Fall, but still played with a hardcore intensity. There are also horns featured on the album along with John Cale-esque viola work. I was confused my first listen, but once I played this bad boy on speakers, I kept coming back to it and it has easily become one of my favorites of the year. Thanks for the kind words SteveG.
I'm listening to yet another Canadian black metal record: This album is called Lys Noir by Monarque. It's somewhat closer to "normal black metal" than Gris or Thantifaxath, being obviously inspired by the Swedish melodic BM style as exemplified by Dawn, Dissection and Sacramentum. The extra influence from Québecois folklore results in a completely different and rather unique mood from those bands, though. |

It's the work of a French artist named Maxime Taccardi, who apparently paints in his own blood.

It looks like it was influenced a bit by East Asian painting styles. Edited by Polymorphia - December 22 2014 at 14:44 |
