Just read about the new Kayo Dot album that's just around the corner while listening to and trying to decide what I think about Hubardo. By now Toby Driver's involved in quite a few projects and I thought it would be interesting to do a poll including most of the profilic releases. Is the old stuff still the best or is he getting more interesting with every release?

I'm not sure what I think. I find most of the latest releases pretty good but kind of patchy. My personal favorite is among the least popular (Blue Lambency Downwards) and I'm not really into Maudlin of the Well at all. But I find every title in the poll interesting and most of it worth having/investigating.

Edit: Had to leave out the other option because I forgot Part the Second

Choirs of the Eye is an undisputed modern classic and gets my vote. That said, Blue Lambency Downward, Coyote, Hubardo, Leaving Your Body Map and Part the Second all run it very close.

I don't think Driver was involved with Gregor Samsa, Mia Matsumiya was the KD member that played with them, and you've missed Vaura. Selenelion was a very good album, have yet to hear the second one though. Oh, and then theres his live playing with Secret Chiefs 3....

He's definitely in Gregor Samsa.

I haven't heard Vaura and left it out because I just read that he played bass there and didn't know how much of a Toby Driver project it was.

Overall Driver has a great back catalog, but the choice is easy for me. Part the Second is probably my favorite album of all time other than CTTE.

Vaura is really good. I don't have most of these but the one that stands out is Choirs Of The Eye. Insanity.

Tough choices as there are so many here . . . my favorite as opposed to what I might think is the best ... has got to be Part The Second ---though Choirs of The Eye is both stunning and devastating.

I'm going with Hubardo, with Choirs, PtS, and Anemone close behind.

Maybe its just because its still fresh, but I'm voting for Hubardo, I love this album. The obvious ones close behind, Choirs, Body Map, Part the Second, and Coyote in no particular order.

Just to clear up on why I left out Vaura:

Vaura is an experimental band from Brooklyn, New York, formed in 2009 by singer, guitarist and primary songwriter Joshua Strawn and featuring Kevin Hufnagel of Dysrhythmia and Gorguts on lead guitar, Toby Driver of Kayo Dot and Secret Chiefs 3 on bass, and Charlie Schmid on drums.

... This left me with the impression that Toby's not one of the driving creative forces in this band. Which he is in all the projects I included.

Then why include Gregor Samsa? From what I can tell he wasn't involved in 55:12 and obviously wasn't the creative force behind Rest, he was more of a session musician as were most of the people playing on that album, though I know Matsumiya toured with them.

I'd say that though he isn't the primary creative force behind Vaura, the bass is very prominent in the music and indisputably Driver's, meaning he's very much involved in that bands sound.

also from an interview with Josh Strawn and Kevin Hufnagel:

KH: A good chunk of Selenelion is material Josh had written on his own before the band was formed, I wrote 3 songs on the album, and a few other short bits here and there. However, we all write our own individual parts, and contribute to the arrangements. Moving forward; myself and Toby are beginning to bring in more song ideas. Considering all the "cooks" we have here, it works rather smoothly. We all share a similar musical aesthetic with this band. The unique mix of individual backgrounds keeps it interesting, I believe.

JS: I often marvel at how easy it is, but then when you think about it it makes sense. You might think there would be a lot of strong egos clashing, but both Toby and Kevin have projects where they are the main writer, and they seem pretty content for Vaura to be a project where I'm more or less guiding the boat in the way they do with Dysrhythmia and Kayo Dot. But then I have such total respect for their ideas and opinions, that any time anyone brings a riff or has an idea for a change or new part in something I've written, I'm completely down for it. Plus it's really cool because everybody in some sense in this band is stepping outside their comfort zone. I'm doing harsher vocals than I ever have and just generally playing heavier music, whereas Kevin and Toby semi-joke that this is their outlet for writing catchy stuff. But as far as the songwriting process, there's really not any one way that we do things. Whatever works. It's laid-back in that sense.
