I was wondering how many bands' first album was their best. Spock's Beard The Light comes to mind. I would also put an honorary mention to Starcastle's first, Yes clone that it may be. Any Thoughts? (parts 1 to.......)

Wallace was listening to "Fountains of Light" just the other day.
I think its a wee bit better than Starcastle's first.

Anglagard comes to mind with their album Hyrbis.

Mike Oldfield's Tubular Bells is one of his best, and definitely most well known albums. Hard to pick one out among the rest for him, though.

I'd say King Crimson, but of course many people disagree when it comes to their best.

This is a question I hope no one has an answer for. As we all like to think of our favorite artists improving with time and each successive release. The first album ideally should be a taste of greater highs to come. Unfortunately, that being as it may...

The closest prog-related example I could think of is the first Residents album, but then I remembered Duck Stab is my favorite.

Tarkus and Brain Salad Surgery are amazing.  The debut is three guys who show their skills independently but find very little cohesiveness.

How'd I forget them. Definitely on this list.

Then again, I'm not a fan of Tarkus. Shocked

heh, I'd argue Trilogy for the strongest album.

One other band I've thought of is Mothers Of Invention. I do lean somewhat towards We're Only In It For The Money but Freak Out! was such a fantastic debut, there definitely could be an argument for it being their best.
