As thrilling as this little derailment has been, then I think it's probably best if we could shimmy on back to the premise of the thread.
I'm not sure yet whether it's going to be people listing debuts or if we're going to talk about the conditions and surroundings of debuts we consider to be the peak of X band, but I'll wait a wee bit before I chug it over to 'lists'.

As for my own suggestions I might not have any other reason than the obvious: imo they never released a better album. But an advantage a debuting band has with their first album is coming out of nowhere without expectations to meet and all that. I would imagine shoulders are lower, energy is higher and the joy and thrill of just being in a studio (well, back in the day) getting to record an album, realizing your teenage dreams etc. can be heard and felt. Doesn't necessarily mean it'll always turn out great of course, but a band can probably never get that kind of rush or sense of innocence back.

This is very true. I often talk about how much I adore the naive in music - the teen rebel "geist" that you often get from debuts.......but yes: sometimes it works - other times perhaps not so much.
NEU!s debut is one of my absolute favourite albums full stop - and it perfectly illustrates the naive and almost childlike coming to effect through the music. It's so simple and unassuming, yet it works (probably also because there are so many layers, when you first get past the overt two or three note 'melody'. There's so much more going down, it's unreal).
75 on the other hand mixes the naiveness of the debut with intermittent post-punk anthems a la Bowie, which by no means are bad, but they ruin the flow of things and thus leaves the debut that more towering. There's a fluid feel there they never succeeded in reproducing.

I don't know about 'best' but Steve Hackett's Voyage of the Acolyte is an absolute classic. Of course, he has made many fine albums through the years, but this is some hell of a debut.

I do however think there is some truth to what Dean said about Script never being surpassed only equalled.

I too prefer Fugazi to Script, but Seasons End is even better than either. I suppose that could be regarded as the debut of the "new" Marillion.

Thumbs Up

Kayak's 2nd and 3rd albums are even better imo although the first 4 Kayak albums are all great.

Why I chose the debut albums that I have chosen?
Hendrix' debut is a LP that changed rock music in general & forever.
Brian Eno's debut album -  Eno didn't repeat such an explosion of creativity than on his debut album. Imo, Eno did do great things later, but not as a solo; it was as a producer and as a (glorious) contribution to other people's albums. And even at the debut of that great contributor Mr Eno - there's one of the greatest Fripp's solos ever.
The Doors - of course, 'cause of The End
Hilllage's debut - the greatest English space rock guitarist at his heydays created an album without a weak moment.
Phallus Dei is a new-grown, fresh and bold for your pleasure.
Alan Persons Project's debut - I think that a comment is unnecessary.
Memories Serves - early 80s NYC at its best.
The debuts of Yugoslavian progressive rock bands Time, Pop Mašina and Leb i Sol - well, you have to trust me in this case.
I am sorry if I forgot something.

Oh and I forgot Briliant Trees - I chose this album because I love Jon Hassell's trumpet so much; also, there's Roxy Music's debut 'cause of 1) beautiful 'tron on Ladytron;  2) I love that spacey sax on Chance Meeting and 3) Mr Ferry's voice at Sea Breezes which is THE best song by them (imo).
Unorthodox Behavior is one of the best English jazzrock LPs released in '70s and for sure the best moment of Brand X.
Tony Wiliams Lifetime's Emergency! is a revolutionary LP regarding jazzrock in general.

A bit of a cheat I know, but Genesis' debut as a trio And Then There Were Three is the best the band recorded in that incarnation. Geek

I agree, one hell of a debut, but the best? I don't know. There's a lot of competition there even from his most recent.

I'll also second Dean's opinion about the Script as Marillion's best (I don't know anything about the Hogarth era, I must admit).

ELP's debut for sure. That's probably the only one I can think of. Gentle Giant's debut is very under rated imo but I wouldn't call it their best.

Exactly, there are too many great Hackett albums for Voyage to be considered his best. BTW, I really dislike Marillion, especially Hogarth's vocal work, but I don't find Fish's much better.

Actually Ágaetis Byrjun was Sigur Rós's second album, their debut being Von.

Actually, I could name many - outside of prog. What this topic has done though is made me realize just how rare it is within the prog genre. Really interesting...
