I've made most of my best discoveries in the past few years, prog or non, through people who are into prog, specifically people on this forum. But it's been a couple of years since I discovered anything so wholely new it electrified me.
In 2008, I discovered Yes, which in 2009 lead to a giant investigation of prog and all things related that lasted for years. In 2011, I got into folk via Joanna Newsom and alternative country via Munly. I then got into female singer-songwriters through Kate Bush. My love of classical was also rekindled (Stravinsky, Bach, Tchaikovsky, Mozart, etc.) In 2012, I started listening to electronic, starting with Bjork. The doors of hip-hop were opened to me via Death Grips. Indie and noise rock became a big part of my listening diet via Deerhoof, Sonic Youth, Mew, etc... In the next couple yaers, my love of metal slowly grew, and I got back into some things I had been into before prog like broadway musicals and "classic rock" / alternative rock. I've made a few fringe discoveries in the past few years as well, like jazz (John Coltrane), tropicalia (Tom Ze), Trip-Hop (Portishead / Massive Attack) I am sending my feelers out here for a new musical direction to plunge into. Or just a really, really great band.

I see you've touched on jazz with Coltrane, but have you ever checked out Pharoah Sanders' Karma? If not, then I wholeheartedly recommend you do so.
For a new group who is doing interesting things, then I'd say Liars. Their new album Mess sees them taking their sound into electronic punk pop something territory - completely robbed of anything that's not a synth, but it cooks! Feels like a big fat middlefinger to the conventional pop scene of today. It's allright to sound 'ugly'.

^^ I was about to say Liars too. I just discovered them prior to the release of "Mess" and I'm now in love with their whole discography. Hard to even say where to start with them, they have constantly evolved over the last 10+ years and it's just plain fun to follow their whole trajectory. I think "Wixiw" is my favorite, even though (or perhaps because) it's the quietest and most subtle album they've done.

I only have Mess and the one with drum in it's name, I forget. Huuuuuuuuuuuuuuge difference. I gather they switched drugs and went from acid to coke somewhere in between the two.

Try some classical music, especially 20th Century composers like Shostakovich, Bartok, Ravel, Debussy, Prokofiev, Vaughan Williams, Elgar, Britten, Lutoslawski, Szymanowski, Stravinsky, Dutilleux, Ligeti, Schnittke, Janacek, Martinu, etc. This should keep you busy for awhile.

I assume you've listened to Swans, but, if you haven't, they are a definite must-hear. More suggestions to come if I think of anything else. |

Indeed, if only for the wonderful art works (the music is brilliant too):

Some great suggestions here. Liars and Pharoh Sanders have both been added to my list. Elephant 9 I have tried before and they are quite good.
Saper, I will try out some of those guys as well haven't heard any of them before. Mirror Image, I've listened to a bunch of those already (Stravinsky, Dutilleux, Bartok, Ravel, Debussy, Prokofiev,etc.). I will check out some of the others as there are some names in there I haven't heard. Polymorphia, I do indeed listen to Swans and they are wonderful :)

Cheers Gaz.
Btw do you know of the Swedish big band/avant psych/female fronted jazz band of Fire! Orchestra? This years Enter is ridiculously good. I'm actually groovin to this as we speak Judging by RYM it appears that they also have conquered your part of the globe, well at least The States. The debut received insanely many ratings and reviews considering how experimental the music gets.

Hyperlinks or not, don't know. But I know I'm not alone in not being able to post links and vids like I used to anymore here on PA. Maybe its an issue with chrome or something. I'm not technical enough to understand anything about turning on or off cookies whatever I supposed to do. It's really annoying.

In terms of good stuff this side of 2010 I can only think of young bands who probably haven't risen to their full potential yet. Parquet Courts, for instance, released one of my favorites this year with Sunbathing Animal, but I do have a feeling they'll release better. It's also very lyric-oriented punk rock, and many people here aren't too interested in either of those descriptors.
My obsession lately (besides Interpol) has been Asian musics— Gamelan, koto, J-pop, kabuki, etc. I've been exploring some of it through the Nonesuch Explorer Series. The series is actually much more immense than the stuff they have in print now, but most of it is at least interesting. The Gamelan, traditional Japanese, and Tibetan ritual orchestra releases, tho.

Best, and arguably one of the most innovative, new(ish) electronic acts: F*ck Buttons.
Also an act who's great with art works:
