When trying trying out a new sound system (or want to impress a friend with yours) and you want to pick a Prog album with exceptional sonic quality - which would you choose?

I'd assume something of a recent date (+/-15 years ago) and then the criteria would be

Level of immediate Impact (sonic wow effect), range of bass, clarity of sound.

Your choices? (Albums/tracks....)

Even though it's 16 years old (1998) Death's The Sound of Perseverance has always stood out at such a crisp, full mix.

Same for Gorguts Obscura.

Secrets of the Beehive ~ David Sylvian... not stunningly Prog by any stretch of the imagination but beautifully recorded, especially the piano.

Can - "Tago Mago" or "Future Days".  Both are filled with fine textural details and polyrhythmic delights, and a good system will really lay out the different sound elements on a virtual canvas in front of you.It sometimes can feel like you are sitting inside the actual music, like it's a living organism that you are now a part of.  And no, I'm not on drugs.

The 2012 remaster of Frank Zappa' s You Are What You Is sounds pretty amazing, unbelievable that is was originally released in 1981 (and recorded a year earlier).

I must recommend Tears For Fears' Seeds of Love. This album is a pure work of genius. From a more prog oriented choice I would recommend Anglagard for it's dynamic recording and Big Big Train for it's complex layers of sounds. Amazing !!

Two albums spring to mind:

Porcupine Tree - In Absentia
Lucio Battisti - Anima Latina

Especially if you're breaking in a new stereo, then I think it's important to have records that both test modern cutting edge productional values (In Absentia) as well as the old school sound and warmth (Anima Latina). The latter is the album I personally consider to be the best produced record ever.

Btw I took the liberty of moving this thread to prog recommendations.

Could've fooled me

Great choices btw. These two really take on another dimension when played loudly on a decent stereo.

I'd like to recommend some ECM stuff because ECM albums were / are always masterfully recorded, for example Cloud About Mercury by Torn, Isham, Bruford & Levin.
There are also great ECM albums by Terje Rypdal, Ralph Towner, Pat Metheny and so on.

Roy Harper: Songs Of Love And Loss. Remastered and "re-engineered" songs from Harper's past albums that tie into the album compilations title. Put out by Salvo in the U.K. in a 2 CD format or download only, the songs sound remixed, cleaned up and awesome.

Terje Rypdal - Eos
Egberto Gismonti - No Caipira
Egberto Gismonti/Jan Garbarek - Magico
Jan Garbarek - Eventyr
Keith Jarrett - The Koln Concert

As for other stuff, there really is not anything in rock music that I think can be made better than it already is. For the most part, many of them had fairly good quality when it was done, and it was good enough to make the music live on, and we still talk about it, which ought to tell you all you need to know about it ... !!!

It's not about the recording ... it's about the music itself ... and good or bad, it is always remembered! I learned that quickly on bootlegs when the quality was not good, but the energy of the show was so high and so valuable, that all else was not important. You lived and died with the energy!
Music is not just for listening ... it is for LIVING ... you got to feel it to know what's it about! Not being told!

Wow, I would not have expected so much diversion in all these suggestions.

Also interesting that many of you are still recommending older recordings. In my experience they can sound beautiful, some remasters with added clarity on top, but would not necessarily be able to fill out the dynamic range (especially the bottom end) of a modern HiFi system.
This is why I tried to limit the suggestions to newer recordings.

When I flip through my CDs it was Proto-Kaw's album "The Wait of Glory" of which I would play the track "Physic". It strikes me with a full bodied sound, and punchy drums.
More things along these lines is what I am looking for.

From what I am gathering here though, it seems mostly not to be the actual recording, not the mix, not even the music itself, but rather the individual ways we trained our ears to listen over all the years.

^ Discipline by KC would be great without a question.
But If you insist on new stuff, then I'd like to recommend David Maxim Micic's Bilo 3.0 and I by Plini/Sithu Aye.

King Crimson - Earthbound Tongue

But seriously, Steely Dan's Aja comes to mind, not very prog (a little bit in there) but it's superbly produced, as are many of their albums.

Yes...Steely Dan Aja was my first choice. Recording brilliance with regard to overall sonic brilliance and instrument details.

Tubular Bells (Vinyl bliss)
Peter Gabriel~So (That CD is amazing)
EW&F~All n All (Vinyl, the horn section kills it everytime!)
Steven Wilson~The Raven blah, blah (Vinyl, insane mastering by Alan Parsons)
Marillion~Brave (Vinyl, remix issue from 2013) Brilliant, the emtion just oozes.
Madaonna~Like A Virgin (CD, original DDD issue) No not prog, although she was progressive for what she did to music. The SQ is pristine, the drumming is tight and cranking this one is well called for.
