His first one by far. Nicely understated.

Hi,

I might listen to it again, but so far I find his latest a bunch of over hyped stuff that is not worth spending a nickel on it. AND, to boot, on the live album in Poland, his ego hides the wonderful stuff that Z. Preissner added.  Kinda tells you that it's not about the music anymore!

Sorry ... first album still. There is also a video of it, with him around France that is very good. The band, appears to be Manfred Mann's band, btw, or at least a few of their folks. I can't remember and need to see it again.
Music is not just for listening ... it is for LIVING ... you got to feel it to know what's it about! Not being told!

I can't believe I'm reading so many compliments about the `About Face' album! Sure, `Murder' is a good track on it (I'd be brave enough to say the ONLY good track on it), but are people thinking of just one piece, or the whole album, which is mostly bland overproduced AOR dreck if I recall?

Totally agree. "Murder" is the only track I'm interested in hearing from About Face. Everything else is subpar, imo. I'd love to hear what Waters would've done with "Murder," blowing it up to a 10 to 20 minute track is my dream...
I went with On an Island, but I love his self-titled album as well. While it's true that About Face is over-produced, I think "David Gilmour" is under-produced (esp. for the year, '78 was it?), and could have used more tonal colors (Rick Wright's keys, a bit of sax). Still, a nice under-the-radar album.

The live version of Murder from Gilmour's tour of that album is really wonderful. It was indeed expanded quiet a bit (don't really remember if it went up to 10 min, though) with some great guitar solos. Actually, the best parts of the solo begin at the point in wich the studio version would have ended. And once again, if only an album of that tour were to be released.

On an Island has 2 or 3 songs that really bug me (This Heaven I think was one of them), otherwise it might be an easy pick for me.  Otherwise I'm about 50/50 in favor of either of the first 2.  None of which leaves me in a good position to vote so bye.

All three have redeeming features but On An Island is my favourite.  Ironically I only listened to it on sunday, it's the perfect accompaniment to a chilled lazy sunday afternoon.

On an Island.

When he rides, my fears subside.
For darkness turns once more to light.
Through the skies, his white horse flies.
To find a land beyond the night.

On an Island but I would've chosen Live In Gdansk if it was an option.

Hmmm...I did like several tracks on the first and second albums but they never really captured my imagination and I thought Island was very boring.....sorry but that's how it seemed to me.

The first was the best, IMO. It was closer to classical Floyd albums.

Me too, it sounds stronger. Plus, it features Rick Wright on every song, unlike the studio album.
