I like Tarkus a lot but it's really no contest for me. Supper's Ready by a mile. Tarkus has this part maybe half way through that sounds almost funky or something with repetitive organ that lasts about three or four minutes. It just goes on too long and doesn't add much to the track. Also, I don't think Carl Palmer kind of plays it safe and doesn't go too crazy on this track like he does on other albums. Still it's a great track.

I love both but the slight edge goes to Supper's Ready; especially the Seconds Out version.

Supper's Ready is ear candy. Tarkus gives me a headache. (I could revise that opinion at a later date, since I've only heard the track a dozen times or so. I didn't even like Supper's Ready till the past few years or so... But this is where I am at this moment in time...)

The best songs on Tarkus are on Side 2. Bitches crystal is one of my fave ELP songs

All I like is prog related bands beginning late 60's/early 70's. Their music from 1968 - 83 has the composition and sound which will never be beaten. Perfect blend of jazz, classical, folk and rock.

both excellent, but for me Tarkus is little above Foxtrot, the absolute ELP masterpiece

Agreed. I can't stand with Supper's Ready. Tarkus is a masterpiece, instead.

Supper's Ready. Tarkus has some awesome parts but they don't really fit together for me (feels a bit carefree because of the themes and the rest of the album). Supper's Ready is a little disjointed too but the music is constantly excellent

If I could choose the live version of Aquatarkus from Welcome Back My Friends... that would push this in favour of ELP. If we're comparing the studio versions I really cannot split these two, it's a dead heat.

For me these two aren't comparable. Supper's Ready is fantastic piece. Almost perfect IMO. Apocalypse in 9/8 is something to live for :-) (even after 30 years of listening to it). ELP are ok but nothing more. My vote goes to the milestone of progressive rock - Supper's Ready.

Of course . But I have never loved Genesis as a lot of proggers seem to do...I don't listen to Supper's Ready since ages, and I don't think I'll do in the next years, but who knows? Once I didn't like Tangerine Dream and now I'm a fan. |
