Topic: What do you think of ELP? Posted: September 07 2014 at 00:55 |
Just wondering what prog fans on here think of ELP. They seem to get a bad rap these days so I just want to see how much prog fans really do or don't like them.

To me they are fundamental. It's a pity that they've been the first big band which has lost its quality leaving us only a bunch of excellent albums and at least the same amount of rubbish.

My opinion is a bit iffy. I absolutely love the classical influences of there work but then again, they have a lot of stuff that is just technically stunning w**kery. Greg Lake has a fantastic voice and the pop songs they did are good. Keith Emerson can really do the classical stuff well and make it crossover too, but the pure prog stuff they've done leaves me cold mostly.

Three of the most essential ingredients in the prog rock movement. Mostly under appreciated and overly bashed. Yes, go ahead and call me a fanboy, I don't give a sh*t. Admittedly, like all of prog's super groups, they have their weak points but that's the nature of the human condition, to NOT BE PERFECT. Yes, Genesis and King Crimson have suffered that same fate over their careers but for some reason ELP have become the poster boys for prog rock whipping. Like in the old west, they always gun for the top dog.

Good band but not one of my favourites. I find them a little patchy and inconsistent. When they're good they're great, when they're not good they can be pretty poor.

They were definitely a good band but most of the time I didn't like their sound too much, too cold I guess. I prefer most of my collection over them. Their debut is my favourite moment and I do like returning to it every now and then.

I really love Tarkus, and I guess that's about it. I have huge respect for them as musicians and for what they did to help the genre out in it's infancy, but I do find most of their music to be unnecessarily complicated (and I actually like complicated music. Henry Cow or Zappa for instance;). -Like the music is fighting with itself. Come to think of it, Tarkus has a section that does this too, but somehow it works for me on there.

If you think they get a bad rap, check out the comments on their highly viewed YouTube videos. They are idolized the world over.

Can't stand them. I've long felt that they were more interested in showing off their technical skills than actually composing coherent music.

I think they have some great material but are incredibly inconsistent. I'd rather skip around song to song than listen to any of their albums in full.

Top 30 but not in my top ten....even though the first 4 or 5 albums are very good, there are tracks on them, especially the later ones, that interrupt the flow of those albums and imho prevent them from being really great albums.
And btw....I adore the first album over all the others. I think they got it right the first time and never recaptured that raw energy and progression.
