I agree entirely. WTTM is among my favourite Floyd songs. SOYCD has that wonderful intro but the song is fairly unremarkable, and when it goes into double time and that sax comes it just falls apart for me.

DSOTM gets the vote.

Cry

'Shine on You Crazy Diamond' is one of my favorites of all time. From the mellow intro to the surreal lyrics, to the saxophone solo that follows and leads onward into the next song. It's beautiful from start to finish, and we're granted with another beautiful second half after we get through the meat of the album. The middle of the album is great, but I believe the epic makes the album and was appropriately spliced to sandwich the rest of the album.

But I also think that Close to the Edge (the title track) is overrated. Different strokes I guess.

Actually, since we started questioning the CTTE status here, I wonder if someone can explain to my why the Fragile is not even in the Top 10 on the PA list?

Or, why is the immaculate Viljans Öga got stuck 10+ positions below the Hybris, which does sound like a somewhat less coherent and polished album?

And, how could the ITCOCK beat the KC's pinnacle album, Red, by a few notches?

As for the original question, I prefer DSOTM for its broader musical diversity, higher level of sonic perfection and, IMO, more relevant/meaningful lyrics. Matter of fact, I'd do just fine if I had only DSTOM and the Animals.

Well, the reason is very simple. The algorythm that calculates the average ratings says so. However, I've read it takes different kinds of ratings with different value (depending on whether there's a review or not, or if it's a collaborator who's voting). Also, the position of the album in the list takes on account the number of votes on the album, and not only the average, so you may see albums with a higher average rating lower in the list.

Wish You Were Here.

When he rides, my fears subside.
For darkness turns once more to light.
Through the skies, his white horse flies.
To find a land beyond the night.

Dark Side by a nose, as it has such a warm human feel to it.  Wish is brilliant in a colder way.  Together they probably represent the collaborative peak of those four.  Animals was a huge letdown in comparison, and The Wall is great but was no longer as collaborative.

Agreed, Shine On You Crazy Diamond is for me one of the best songs ever made, all parts of it.

Still, as an album I prefer DSOTM.
On WYWH I'm not so crazy about Have A Cigar, and Welcome To The Machine and Wish You Were Here are nice, but no more than that.
I'm sure not everybody agrees with me.

Both excellent, but there's a bit more magic on The Dark Side.

Dark Side' for its dark side. Easily within the top 20 prog albums ever produced. That's not to detract from Wish'. A fine follow-up in its own right.

"Wish You Were Here"
I feel its thematically more cohesive than DSOTM.

This fits my perspective nicely.

agreed. Also just not a fan of DSOTM.  I don't like the concept of "over-rated" - just because I don't adore an album doesn't mean other people shouldn't - but DSOTM I just never warmed up to.

Wish is the better album. But neither are great to me
All I like is prog related bands beginning late 60's/early 70's. Their music from 1968 - 83 has the composition and sound which will never be beaten. Perfect blend of jazz, classical, folk and rock.

totally the opposite for me
Time
Breathe
Great Gig In The Sky
Us and Them

all wonderfull stand alone songs but the whole concept thing just leaves me cold and the instrumental bits just feel like filler
on the other hand WYWH works for me a whole. The link between the tracks is emotional not conceptual and I like the 'book ending' of SOYCD although I can understand why that might not find favour.

Hi,

Aside from 2 cuts in it, WYWH is a copykat album of the previous one and to my ears not that good.

But PF signed a deal with the record company and that was that (see the cover shaking hands with the guy on fire!)!

To me, when that happened, it really was the end of the real PF.
Music is not just for listening ... it is for LIVING ... you got to feel it to know what's it about! Not being told!
