Topic: Steve Hackett vs Richard Blackmore Posted: September 14 2014 at 12:54 |
Two really strong guitarplayers whom have similar affinities/taste fro folk, rock, classical, jazz and other styles, and similar way of playing those, both are Paganinis of the guitar, very flexible be it Heavy or open/lyrical. Both have huge flair and finesse which differs them from many of their pairs. also i like this pairing as it pairs two of the greats prog and metal. Could the be called unspoken heroes, maybe not. But not singed so often as Page, or Iommi or Gilmour.

Two very different style guitarists. Blackmore's fine for the heavy rock stuff but overall Hackett comfortably trounces him as he can play most styles from classical through to tapping.
Strange comparison really.

Not that i care about either guitarist really, but isn't Blackmore involved in more than just the 70's hard rock bands? Isn't he in some folky renaissance band at the moment?

Right on, yes indeed. Their solo works speak for their own.

I prefer Hackett, but respect Blackmore's playing enormously.

Blackmore definitely sounds awesome by what i've seen, but Hackett gets the vote here.

Just the fact that Blackmore once said in the liner notes of some 'Purple album or another that he could "mop the floor with most guitarists" puts him in question. Hackett is faster, cleaner, and more technical than Ritchie ever hoped to be. By the way, I recently saw where the prog metal episode of the TV documentary Metal Evolution starts with a short interview with Hackett who generally said he appreciates prog metal bands.

I saw both in their 70s heydays with Deep Purple and Genesis, and Blackmore wins by a wide margin. Blackmore's leads were jaw-dropping, while Hackett was more an accompaniment often overshadowed by Banks' keyboards.

Oh well. That "Richard" name almost confused me. To be true I didn't know who he is first... Jeez I never saw anybody named him Richard... Maybe it would be better to write Ritchie... Never mind. I love Ritchie Blackmore and his guitar playing was almost flawless technically. His Deep Purple years and the Rainbow too were great. What he plays in these days (Blackmore's Night) don't bother me though. But hands down - even as I like his music contribution I like Hackett more. And in my eyes they aren't comparable too. Blackmore is almost pure hard rock guitar player which couldn't be said about Hackett (he is more versatile IMO). So: Hacket gets my vote.

So did I. We clearly must have been watching different bands. Blackmore was more overtly flashy and rather heavier with an emphasis on speed, but also lacked Hackett's subtle control and more advanced technical skills.
But they were both classy players.

Hackett, but I love Blackmore's classically influenced leads.

Giving it up to Blackers. Along with all the flash, he helped elevate rock guitar to a new standard. Even though I do not like Blackmore's Night, I find his playing there very tasteful and sophisticated. To hear him at his best, check out some of the live Rainbow recordings.

Two of the best guitarists in rock history. Hackett will get my vote, only because of my personal taste, since Blackmore is as good, but with a quite different style.

Yes he is - Blackmore's Night, but I've never listened to them so I'm just commenting on what he's best known for i.e. Purple and Rainbow. I may be doing him a disservice there but I would still think overall Hackett is a more talented guitarist.
