I vote Blackmore. Check out 'Lazy' live from the DP 1970/1972 album.

I corrected the thread title
Btw Chris, this is something you could do yourself just by editing your OP. As for the poll, I dig Genesis' music more, but technically speaking I'd have to vote for Ritchie. He feels more like a 'natural' guitar player to me. Whenever he plays something, he does so very fluidly (I'm not saying that Hackett isn't fluid; he just doesn't come across as a 'natural' player in the sense that I mean). I think Ritchie can play anything of Hackett's while I have a hard time picturing it the other way around. This little intro to Smoke On The Water from the Come Hell Or High Water live album is surely proof of Ritchie's skills. Sounds like Mozart on a guitar.

I really don't mind about the artist techniques and virtuosities as long as he can deliver me majestic compositions to my delight. It's a funny joke comparing their solo works, sorry but I see no reason for this poll, apart from their radically different styles btw.

Steve Hackett is an extraordinarily original guitarist. He creates a much wider range of tones and textures than Blackmore (who is obviously a great guitarist).

I slightly prefer Hackett although I consider Blackmore more of a technical player

Very difficult to compare the two. Completely different techniques.

Apples and oranges really, as they are known for playing very different styles of music. However, just because Blackmore is known for his work with hard rock bands doesn't mean that he's technically inferior, or incapable of playing more complex stuff. His recent work with Blackmore's Night (a band I don't care for, mostly because of the vocals) proves quite clearly that he doesn't need flash and bombast to deliver the goods.
Anyway, I resent the implication that hard rock is a second-rate genre compared to prog in terms of skill or versatility. Donald "Buck Dharma" Roeser is also known for playing in a "hard rock" band, but he could easily win a contest with many acclaimed prog guitarists. |
