I've listened to the first half of Deadwing, including the famous "Arriving Somewhere but Not Here", but I just don't see what the fuss is all about. It seems to me, at my current state, that they're barely prog!

Though this opinion is only based on 6 songs (and "Trains" from In Absentia too), and I'd like your help at giving me another starting point:

Which Porcupine Tree album(s) should a beginner listen to?

Keep in mind that I'm quite experienced in progressive rock in general, so I'm not a total newbie! Big smile

Coma Divine.

The track 'The Sky Moves Sideways' is fantastic.

Good band, but like any other they're not for everyone. I think Signify, Deadwing, In Absentia and Fear of a Blank Planet are all excellent albums.

The others I've heard are all around 3 stars imo.

I don't know what you mean when you say they're not prog. What sort of music do you think they make?

I never said "they're not prog", I meant what I heard of them didn't sound much like prog. Then again, I know that they're prog and only want more progressive examples of their music, since I didn't really like some of Deadwing (especially "Shallow" and "Halo"). I did like the title track, and I guess I have to give "Arriving Somewhere..." some time to grow on me.

I'm also really liking Coma Divine, thanks a lot for the suggestion! I'll look more into their 90s/ early 00s albums.

Well, prog comes in many flavours. Does King Crimson sound like Jethro Tull..?

I prefer the psychedelic era so I would also suggest Coma Divine because there are songs from every studio album of that era.

Fear of a Blank Planet was voted the Collaborator's Top Prog Album of 2007.  (to the chagrin of many I'm sure).  It is more in the vein of his "modern" prog sound.  Alex Lifeson guests with a guitar solo on Anesthetize and Robert Fripp guests on Way Out of Here, so these might be of some interest to you.

I'd certainly agree that at times they sound quite commercial and mainstream, but that's not always a bad thing. The same could be said for Rush, Queen, Floyd, Genesis, Yes at certain points in their careers, and even KC in the early 80's... All good though - discounting various 80's efforts from Genesis!

I would have said Deadwing to start with. I'm not that familiar with the stuff before "In Absentia" but I believe they were more Floyd-like in those days. I'm not that keen on "The Incident" which is the most recent one.

Have you tried Steven Wilson's solo stuff? I prefer most of that to PT.

Haha yeah, some of my favourite artists did make some really cheesy stuff at a certain point. Best to ignore them sometimes... I actually didn't mind 90125 at all, for example; sure, it was pop, but it still had the Yes feel!

The only real commercial album KC did was Beat in my opinion; Three of a Perfect Pair had its share of prog, and Discipline was just great Big smile

I thought I'd take a look at his band before moving on to his solo projects, since that's what I do with any band. Porcupine Tree came first, so I'll start with them, then move on to solo work if I like what I hear Smile

90125 is actually one my favourite Yes albums...

I love the 80's KC albums, and yes Beat is certainly the most commercial album. Some prog bands did commercial very well imo, Genesis were not one of them imo...

Yeah, Genesis pretty much died with Hackett's leave. There Were Three is just bad. Duke is actually good for the 30-minute Duke story, the rest is just straight up pop. And we all know what happened after that...

I can handle everything up to and including Duke, beyond that they lost me! I really like ATTWT though. It was the album that really got me into them, so I guess there's some sentimentality in it for me.

In Absentia, Dead Wing and Fear Of are more properly prog metal in my book but still great. If you're looking for more of an ambient/heavy prog sound you're going to have to go back to earlier albums like Signify, Stupid Dream and ones earlier than those. The live Coma Devine suggested by David is an excellent introduction to PT's earlier work. Those albums may suit your taste better.
