Hello everyone, I seem to have a little problem.
I've always been a huge prog fan and ProgArchives has broaden my mind to SO much music.
Just recently, me and my guitar player bought tickets to see King Crimson in Los Angeles on October 2nd. my guitar player is a Crimson fan, and I know they are one of the most Iconic groups in prog history.
Now when I say this I might get crucified.... BUT I do not know much of King Crimson, never got around to experiencing their music to the fullest Besides a few songs I heard in Pandora... I don't count that! I like experiencing an Album entirely.
What album or where would be the best place to start experiencing King Crimson? and what am I expecting at this concert? I noticed they had a vast change in line up...
I did not want to bother my guitar player with all the details... and I really wanted to read the opinions and facts about the group through you guys!!!

Well, KC is 45+ years old, and the only permanent fixture has been Mr. Fripp, may he live long and prosper. As Mr. Fripp journeyed through different stages of his musical evolution, he synergized with different musicians to achieve the King Crimson effect. In my book, KC peaked around 1973-1974, but tastes vary.
(btw, why did I think he'd retired from active music-making, or was there some kind of a legal unpleasantry that prevented him from touring?)

Most of their albums shold be available to isten to on Youtube.
I would recommend:
In the court of the crimson king Islands Lizard Red Discipline Three of a perfect pair Thrak Tha power to believe
That spans all their era's. They're all excelent albums, but all very different. King Crimson according to Fripp is "a way of doing things" So, they're not like Yes or Tull sticking to a tried and tested formula for long runs of albums. The line ups and styles changed all the time. Good luck! Took me ages to get into them, but now I love them.
Edit: Larks tonges in apsic is worth a listen too.

Thus is a very tricky question as the music you are going to experience (you lucky devil) will be very different from the albums that have been stated above. KC have always been known for their improvised jams during concerts and with 3 drummers and 2 bassists (if I'm correct), the new material will sound like later Crimsom material like Thrak and Vrooom, Vrooom. I would suggest for this circumstance that you listen to The Condensed 21st Century King Crimson compilation released in 2006. It starts with the essential material from ITKotCK and concludes with cuts from their final album up to that time The Power To Believe. It's not a satisfying experience for hard core KC fans but it should help you undestand all of the musical styles that KC has gone through so you will not be skocked by what Mr. Fripp and Co. have in store for you and us this time around.

I guess listening some live King Crimson albums would make sense too. Something from the Larks-Red period, like "The Great Deceiver" and "Collectible King Crimson vol 1". Also, perhaps some live album from their double trio line-up (though those ones have lot's of 80's stuff, which was just said aren't being played).

While Discipline is my favorite album by the King, (and I would recommend listening to it at some point) Islands or Larks would be an optimal place to start.

While not exactly a Crimhead....I'm a big fan of KC so I would listen to ITCOTCK, Red, and Discipline and perhaps one of the newer albums like Power To Believe to get an overall idea of their various incarnations.
