Fair enough ... try this for something completely different:

In their discography you can listen to the albums, I recommend Kaada & Patton - Romances.

I'm listening to a sample now...  it's like...  power metal...  there's a VERY fine line between prog metal and power metal, but I prefer to stay on the prog side...

Do you know Beyond Twilight? Great band ... I'm always confusing their band name with VP's album name ...

I can understand that opinion.  I *love* Threshold, though I don't get into 'em as much as Vanden Plas.  Hell, I even have Threshold's live DVD, and they are PERFECT live...  I'd possibly rate it higher than a VP live album, but I still prefer Beyond Daylight over anything I've heard from Threshold (though I prefer Threshold's Critical Mass over the other VP albums).

I agree that it makes sense to compare albums with their peers, rather than with all other prog albums. But which are similar artists/bands in this case? Threshold comes to my mind - and I'd prefer their albums over the Beyond Daylight anytime - Hypothetical and Critical Mass are better. and those aren't even the best in the genre - their album Subsurface is nearly perfect.

So:

  • Subsurface: 5 stars
  • Critical Mass: 4 stars (4 1/2)
  • Hypothetical: 4 stars
  • Beyond Daylight: 4 stars (3 1/2)

All IMO of course.

That's a good question.  I thought we were to compare it to other albums in their own subgenre...  in the melodic, song-driven prog-metal genre, I think it's 5 stars.  If it was to be overall overall, against everything else to ever exist, I'd probably give it 4.5, if I could.  But if I were simply to be comparing it to Dream Theater, Symphony X, bands like that...  yeah, 5 stars.

Do you really think that the album is as good as Unfold the Future and Remedy Lane? A while ago you said in one of your posts that these were the only albums which you would rate 5 stars, unless I'm mistaken.

I really like the album, but I think it seriously lacks originality.

Good review Man Overbored, nice touch the added link to a VDP song
