Topic: T-Rex vs Mott the Hoople Posted: November 13 2014 at 19:46 |
Im not so familiar With glam, but i like some of it, but i will make this make me spark more interest of it. Its a cool genre, With Bowie, Slade, Sweet, and many other cool bands, but these two in the poll are most iconic.

tough choice, they both have some good stuff (Jitterbug Love, All The Way From Memphis) and some not so good. Based on the albums I'd go for Mott (just).

Mott is only a quasi-glam band; they were ready to pack it in after a few solid hardish rock records when Bowie passed Dudes along to them and offered to produce their next record. Of course, the band had to bend to Bowie's style and Mott the Glam was born. Still, I feel Ian was never comfortable in this role. He was already in his mid-30s and the whole scene was "kick you in the head once you reach 25" and none too masculine - a trait Ian really dug in his music. The album after Dudes (Mott the Hoople) kind of turned the band back to heavyish rock but still maintained a bit of glam 'cause they needed to sell records.
T-Rex took to glam after several folksy albums, but the glam scene suited Bolan much more naturally (pretty boys at heart), so even though I'm more of a Mott fan, I think T-Rex was more in tune to the glam scene.

T.Rex. I believe this band was quintessentional of what's called 'glam rock'.
Mott the Hoople was a very interesting band as well, I like what they were doing on their later albums, when they were mixing the harsh proto-punk sounds with artsy and glam elements.

Voted for T-Rex who just seemed like a pop artist at the time with Marc being in the same category as Donny Osmond and David Cassidy. Mott were just jumping on the Glam bandwagon to keep afloat financially and were more a hard rock band.

Hmm, not sure I'd lump Bolan in with Donny Osmond.

This is such a close call for me, loved both . Loved Electric Warrior and The Slider by the Rex, but also loved Mott and The Hoople albums.
I think I had fonder memories of the times with Mott, but it is 51% to 49% today, so that was the vote. I think Mott the Hoople sort of fringed on the beginning of Punk Movement back then also.
The Sweet were also one of my favorites....Desolation Blvd.

All the Young Dudes (which i haven't heard in awhile) topples T. Rex's most popular numbers in a landslide for me (though they're good too). Mott the Hoople it is.

THE SLIDER was a very strange album for it's time. I forget who arranged the strings for it or maybe it was just a cello only..??? ....but it was quite strange to hear Rock guitar and cello playing in octives creating a hard edge to Rock. I remember when ELO produced the sound in "Ma Ma Belle" ..so T.Rex sometimes had that particular sound which made some of the Rock songs sound more interesting.

Prefer Mott... but I do like the very early T Rex albums which were more psych folk rock than glam.

Hoople without a second thought. And loved Ian Hunter solo as well.
