The Stranglers vs. Minutemen
With their gothic imagery and misanthropic lyrics, the Stranglers were, along with the Damned, an important precursor to goth rock. Their songs were often more complex than their punk contemporaries, and had odd structures. Eventually they left punk and veered towards art-pop, gaining mainstream success with the single "Golden Brown."
Typified by eclecticism moreso than their contemporaries, Minutemen were a hardcore band that, much like Husker Du, defied hardcore trends. With their forty-five track double-album Double Nickels on the Dime they churned out song after song that defied expectations of what a hardcore band was supposed to sound like.

Oh Dear I haven't heard much of The Minutemen - but, they don't come close to The Stranglers at their best. Great band, great musicians, great songs. Home Win again.

The Minutemen, one of my all time favorite bands. I'm fairly new to the Stranglers, and I like what I know, but the Minutemen were one of the greatest bands of all time.

Me too. Enormous respect for Stranglers, but MM are the greatest "punk" band in my book. Steve actually saw them live before Boonie perished, something I would give a nut and half to have witnessed.

The few times I listened to some Minutemen songs, I've never been further than thinking: "Interesting". On the contrary, the Stranglers are a band that I listened to since I'm a teenager. I know some of their songs are horribly sexists ("Bring on the Nubiles" on their second LP), but most of their songs are fantastic. If you ask to make you an anthology of their work, I would bring you a 10 CD boxset!

I was lucky enough to see them twice. 1st time was in 1984 on what was called "The Tour". It was 5 SST bands who appeared in this order:
1) SWA
2) Saccharine Trust
3) The Meat Puppets
4) Minutemen
5) Husker Du
I went to see Husker Du who had gotten a lot of radio play on the local junior college station I listened to and I had no idea who the Minutemen were. Needless to say, I walked out of that show a Minuteman Maniac. They were fantastic...here's a couple shots I took that night.
I also saw them in early '85 and they opened by playing the 1st 2 sides of Double Nickels with no break between songs. One of the great concert experiences I ever had. A few months later I had ordered a video of 1984's "The Tour" from SST and gave them a call to find out when it was going to ship. The girl that answered the phone told me D had just died in a car crash and the whole office was devastated. I couldn't believe he was gone. I had a subscription to Guitar Player magazine at the time and after 3 or 4 issues I noticed they made no mention of him so I wrote them a long letter as to why he was important and they should do an article on him. I never heard back and no article appeared so I cancelled my subscription to honor his passing and have never bought another issue.

The Stranglers are brilliant. I hate punk, but they are an art rock band who used a punk image as a launch pad.
Hugh Cornwell is a really nice guy. I once played cricket against him when a League select XI played Bunbury CC and he was just a normal bloke with no rock star airs at all.

Ya, he probably would! Around that time Guitar Player would devote tons of coverage to any shredder who could play a diminished scale in 64th notes but wouldn't acknowledge the passing of one of the most unique players around

Grew up with the Stranglers. Nice N Sleazy contains my favourite synth solo. Golden Brown is as prog as anything can be in 3 minutes.Don't know the other band so no vote.
