While I enjoy some Smiths/Morrissey, R.E.M. has always been a favorite of mine. Their 80s output through Document was just incredible.

Although i'm American, i prefer the Smiths. I don't find either of these to be my favorite jangle pop though. I love Australia's Hoodoo Guru's more than both. Especially the debut "Stoneage Romeos."

REM. I'd rather stick a rusted fork in my eye than listen to The Smiths.

I always find The Smiths compelling but go hot and cold with R.E.M. I go for long periods without wanting to hear them and that never happens with Morrisey and Marr.

It's pretty tight but I'll vote for The Smiths. I lost interest in REM after Automatic for the People, but up until then they were consistently excellent. Although the Smiths made less albums, I don't think they put a foot wrong.
..and for no reason here's one of my fave REM songs.. REM - You are the everything.. Edited by Blacksword - January 01 2015 at 03:01 |

REM. I like a bit of The Smiths here and there, but those 1st 5 REM albums changed my world

Other than a song or two, I don't know The Smiths but I'd rather stick a rusted fork in my eye than listen to anything by REM.

R.E.M. is quite enjoyable but I've been more times on the mood for some Smiths. Additionally, REM don't manage to hook me on as much as The Smiths still do these days....quite a few of their songs feature a romantic spirit - also nostalgic at times - that really makes them very unique when it comes to a post-punk band. Very few bands featured such a delightfully tender, sentimental and sweet melodies that are for me The Smiths' trademark.......
My very favourites: "Reel Around The Fountain" "Paint A Vulgar Picture" "Girlfriend In A Coma" "There Is A Light That Never Goes Out" "That Joke Isn't Fun Anymore" "Girl Afraid" And Morrissey's solo career also has some gems, "Everyday Is Like Sunday" maybe my favourite. . The overwhelming amount of information on a daily basis restrains people from rewinding the news record archives to refresh their memories...

Both, thanks.
I like each a lot for different reasons. I never would have thought to compare them, or to see them as somehow "competing" for my affection. Actually, I have that outlook toward much of art: there are many things which I essentially like equally well. I like to mix it up. |

BTW, I think REM's "Find the River" is a very beautiful song.
