Happy Mondays vs. Throwing Muses
Happy Mondays are the seminal Madchester group representing the height of the scene's pop sensibilities. They not only influenced other Madchester groups, but a large amount of Britpop and post-Britpop groups as well.
Starting as an abrasive post-punk group, Throwing Muses were the first band signed to 4AD, and Pixies rose to prominence by opening for them. They quickly progressed to a hooky pop sound, but kept their signature jarring lyric style. Guitarist Tanya Donelly eventually collaborated with the Pixies' Kim Deal to form the Breeders, whom I considered included, but I had too many American groups already.

The Throwing Muses by a mile and a half. The Real Ramona is one of my favourite albums by anybody. I never saw anything in the Madchester scene better than average.

I think I'll put on my Throwing Muses CD now. I haven't yet really gotten into it, maybe today is the day. Can't really recall listening to Happy Mondays so maybe I need to try them too. I keep thinking of the Housemartins instead. Probably nothing like them.

Happy Mondays and Housemartins are not horribly dissimilar, but I'd say they're different groups.
Throwing Muses' first album is a post-punk album which I'd normally prefer, but I honestly prefer their pop stuff. I find their post-punk near-unlistenable which is rare. It's just very tedious.

I'm only really familiar with the early stuff. They had a really good track on an early 4AD sampler album called "Lonely is an Eyesore", which is how I came to know of them. Only recently I bought a 2 disc set containing a couple of early albums, and that's what I put on just today. Sounded pretty good today.
