Coltrane made me a fan of SoM. My Favorite Things is one of the best songs ever.

Oh yes, the Coltrane version is great.
Suddenly it becomes bitter sweet. It's a subtle mood change.
And what great piano playing on the particular track.

West Side Story.  Leonard Bernstein at his very best.

One of my brothers really, really, REALLY likes Sound of Music (and I suspect him to consider Julie Andrews as the Ideal Woman). For my part, I remember having watched this movie wen I was a kid and... couldn't bear it.

I stick to West Side Story: the story has more resonance to the urban child I was, and I prefer the songs. If I wanted to hear a musical set in the Alps, I would write a musical version of Heidi.

And that's a good enough reason. Also WSS has the best song of the two ("Somewhere")  + the Jet Song, Something's Coming and America.

Mind you, SoM has goats.

Heavens, my brother sings this song with a perfect imitation of the goats, it's nearly disquieting.

West Side Story. Coltrane's rendition of My Favourite Things is a masterpiece, but the Dave Brubeck Quartet did something equally remarkable with songs from West Side Story.

You need to put on the Bonzo Dog Band's version ... and cry after laughing so hard ... ohhh , please, make sure you do it LOUD!
Music is not just for listening ... it is for LIVING ... you got to feel it to know what's it about! Not being told!
