Both artists are know to be unpredictable, changing style from album to album.

Is PJ really good enough and interesting enough to be compared to Beck? Beck is great, and I mean no sarcasm. Haven't heard a note from PJ.

^I haven't really listened to much of her. What I have heard of her is pretty good. She's definitely darker and more abrasive. I'd say she's competition enough, but I have Beck in the "like but not love" category. It's harder for me to connect with artists with wildly sporadic careers like his. My impression of PJ Harvey is that I'd have the exact same problem with her.

PJ's great. Her classic '90's material just ran amok over the entire spectrum of alt rock, including being pretty much the only major British artist to work with grunge sounds.
