Can't choose just one collaboration, but went with Phil Manzanera just because I played Frontera so often on the air. I would also mention his involvement with the electronic outfit Ultramarine (also heavy airplay on SPACE PIRATE RADIO) and Anja Garbarek, the musician daughter of Norwegian saxophone artist Jan Garbarek. Smiling & Waving is the disc released on Norway's Virgin label.

Has to be the Hatfields for me. |
If I was told I could only pick one album from the list to listen to for the next few years it would be Hatfield And The North's debut which I do find rather difficult at times but man what an album. Like Greaves' Songs album I feel Michael Mantler's Hapless Child is really a special recording and although no one has mentioned Kevin Ayers two recordings I included here there is such a charm about them that I really feel fortunate to own them. |
Nice poll, John I don't have 5 of the titles here, but I will give my vote to Mantler/Gorey Hapless Child - Wyatt does an incredible job with the stories. The Kevin albums are really special too. Wyatt did 'appear' on Eno's Before And After Science, under the 'Shirley Williams' pseudonym....credited with 'time'

The glaring ommission on this list is the Canterbury-influenced 'United Kingdoms' by Ultramarine. Wyatt delivers two songs plus a tribute in 'Instant Kitten'. When I first saw Ultramarine live they were sampling Soft Machine's first album. Really surprised this is not on the list.

Surprised? I never even heard of them plus they aren't on this site even that I can see. I'll check them out though.

Good to see some others get some votes besides Gilmour and the Hatfields.

Hi Mosh, That is an album I haven't heard before but did check it out and have noticed people are calling this a Carla Bley solo album put under Mason's name. True?

I went with Syd's debut. I love that thing. Almost went with Whatevershebringswesing because I listened to the title track this morning...

You are very welcome Mellotron Storm. I like this outfit very much. Very air friendly. United Kingdoms is the album with Wyatt's most noticeable contributions. The album before, Every Man & Woman Is A Star, is also very trippy.

I can't help but laugh thinking about the guys from Soft machine helping Syd out here and after playing the track once Syd basically tells them they are done and they thought they were just getting warmed up.

That info came from the Robert Wyatt book I have called 'Wrong Movements' . BTW, we both know that Before And After Science is a great album, even if you can't actually hear Wyatt
