Very hard choice, since the 3 of them are fantastic players, and with different approach/mood in their playing. However, I will have to vote for Martin Barre, mainly for personal taste, though all three are winners in my book.

I like Martin Barre a lot BUT he's not in the same league as Jan Akkerman. I've never even heard of the other dude.

Steve Hackett | Point taken. He's not among the choices because both PG and John Hackett have a very different flute playing style. I chose these three in order to compare guitarists who have participated in the Tull model for some portion of their output. Of course there are a lot more to Focus and Jade Warrior than just that.

Depends on what you're looking for. Akkerman is a faster and more fluid guitarist; however, Martin Barre has come up with far, far more memorable riffs, and he can play flute as well (duetting with Ian on Bouree for instance). |
ok but can he play guitar while someone is yodelling?

Jan Akkerman, the Johan Cruyff of the guitar! My joint favourite all time guitarist along with Steve Howe.
