I like the word eschew, especially when asking people to abstain from sneezing: "Please eschew the achoo". Aside from M@x needing to be the one to decide on making the move, the problem I see is that we have about 12 years of ratings based on the five star system we have (aside from the zero which was once in place).

What I would like to see changed is the ratings descriptions to explicitly indicate subjectivity. For instance, instead of 5 stars "Essential: a masterpiece of progressive rock music", it could be 5 stars "Tha Shizz imo" and one star "tha Shi*z imo", or words to that effect. Okay, on the masterpiece one you can easily say, well, duh, of course music is subjective and that that's just your opinion, but then other descriptions seem to be telling others how they should think. "Excellent addition to any prog rock music collection", ah, no, maybe not for my collection. "Good, but non-essential", for you, maybe. "Collectors/fans only" Wtf? So only get it if you're a fan of the band or like to collect music from the band (I do know what it means)? "Poor. Only for completionists". Is completionist even a proper word? Well, I guess it is, but I prefer completest. Where it can get worse is when people are rating albums in categories that they aren't familiar with or enjoy (I think there should be an element of rating in comparison to other albums of the same ilk).

Since we have fractional ratings ultimately anyway  on all the albums here due to the number of votes I think the .5 star idea is a good one.....not that anyone cares.

"If It Ain't Broken Don't Fix It !"

Let me make it easy for you:

* Extremes have a strong emotional factor behind them: 1 star - you hate it; 5 stars you love it.
* 3 stars - balanced middle point, valued work with both its strengths and weaknesses.
* More on the weak side - 2 stars , 4 stars - more on the strong side.

THE END

What else do we need ?

^Well the point is that most members have been asking for this implementation for the last 8 years. It's not that anything is broken or anything of that sort...people just want to be able to rate the music with an increased precision.

With all due respect:
That "precision" on this so subjective matter (Personal Taste) is just, I'm afraid, an unattainable goal.
I respect good intentions, though.
Have fun

Sure it's all down to subjective matters, I completely agree. I'm only trying to explain to you why folks want this.

Yep, it's OK, but my counter-point is:

Don't use the "precision" argument, please !
People just want to have fun (me too) using their Rating Super-Powers (I pass) to the fullness of their capacity.
This involves the use of 0,5 oz of Kryptonite, sorry, Star Dust Powder ?
So it seems...

If an album is 3.5 stars to a member, then it's also more precise to rate it with 3.5 stars instead of 3 or 4.
The 'precision argument' is the only one that makes sense.

someone should tell them words work best.. worry more about describing.. less about rating LOL I want to know about albums, not what Joe 6 Pack thinks of the album

Clap Excellent idea.

I would give only 9/10 to "Selling England by the Pound" by GENESIS because I have never liked that Collins tune and his lame and weak singing. An annoying tune, clearly a filler. The same with "Are you ready Eddie?" on Tarkus album. Fzzzz...

I would replace it with "Twilight Alehouse" from Nursery era and give the album 10 stars. 10+ actually because then it would a perfect GENESIS album.

But I still give "Pound" 5 stars as giving 4 does not do justice to this otherwise brilliant Prog Classic.
You may see a smile on Tony Banks´ face but that´s unlikely.
