There can be fewer films in the last sixty years that have gained the tag as being epic, but Ben-Hur and Spartacus are definitely in that category!
Ben-Hur released in 1959,won 11 Oscar's for that year, and is a colossal production!Charlton Heston is perfectly cast as Juddah Ben-Hur,and must be one of Heston's best movies.Stephen Boyd as Ben-Hur's childhood friend then enemy, the Tribune Massala is very convincing.Add to this great performances by Jack Hawkins,Hugh Griffith and the awesome chariot race, and sea battle, make for a truly spectacular movie.
Spartacus, released a year later in 1960,won 4 Oscar's,but is no less spectacular than its predecessor.Kirk Douglas as Spartacus is terrific, and the scenes in the arena during his training and competing against his fellow slaves are impressive. The remaining cast are superb.Jean Simmons,Peter Ustinov and Tony Curtis add some class, but the real stars are Charles Laughton, and Laurence Olivier, who as General Crassus plays the character with enormous presence.
Two epic movies released within a year of each other but both worthy of their epic titles.Pick your favourite……

Ben-Hur is one of the most impressive films I ever saw.
Spartacus is good, but not as good as Ben-Hur.

A great but unexpected poll. I love both movies with the acting nod going to Sparticus (Sir Larry is in it for Christ sakes!) but Ben Her has the amazing chariot race and a better ending. So, my vote's for BH.

Ben Hur. Tony Curtis with his Bronx accent grates in Spartacus.

Or like his famous utterance from another movie, "Yondah lies dah castle of my fadduh."

Cant vote because I havent seen Ben Hur yet. Yeah, shame on me Embarrassed

But I have a taste for the communist-naive (not so naive, given the macarthism of the times) vision of both Howard Fast and Dalton Trumbo. A hero of the masses, the bearer of revolution! Its nice.
