I don't find people being humiliated funny.  I used to spend every episode cringing.  It never worked for me as a comedy.

Yes, given my avatar, a reasonable statement

There is, actually, a reason why not. As brilliant as the tv series were, the books of them were vastly superior, certainly when read through the eyes of a lifelong civil servant. They go into the detail of civil service machinations and manipulations far better than the shows ever did, and come highly recommended if you can get them.

agreed, the books are great, but the books didn't have Nigel Hawthorne and Paul Eddington.

It's more of a comedy-drama (dramedy) than a situation-comedy (sitcom) - while they can have a serious side, sitcoms are generally played for laughs whereas comedy-dramas are more dramas with comedy in them.

I prefer the radio versions of Rumpole (Timothy West played the older Rumpole and now Benedict Cucumberbatch is currently playing the younger Rumpole).
What?

Didn't know about the radio versions of Rumpole, Dean.  Thanks.  I should track those down and have a glass of Chateau Thames.
