No mention of Il Volo Cool
I got the first album and it's one of the best Italian albums ever made
All I like is prog related bands beginning late 60's/early 70's. Their music from 1968 - 83 has the composition and sound which will never be beaten. Perfect blend of jazz, classical, folk and rock.

I don't really know much more than the basics, and my favourites have already been posted, but still:
- Inferno by Metamorfosi.
- Zarathustra by Museo Rosenbach.
- YS by Il Balleto di Bronzo.
- Felona e Sorona by Le Orme.
- And something from Banco del Mutuo Soccorso... I guess their self titled one and Darwin for starters.

Maxophone might be the best of Italian albums. Excellent stuff

Unless you are looking for vintage vinyl, you would probably find the bigger names on the list (PFM, Banco, Le Orme, Area) cheaper and less logistically troublesome from an online vender like importcds.com.

I would throw away Chocolate Kings due to highly annoying, experimental vocals and average really music - it's a very much different PMF to the one known from Storia or Amico (Check Magnum Vaeltaja's input: "All of the PFM stuff up to and including L'Isola Di Niente, plus Stati Di Immaginazione" - says it all).

I second Goblin's Il Fantastico Viaggio Del "Bagarozzo" Mark recommendation - what a fantastic album is that!

It's not necessarily "vintage" classic, but have a listen to Logos. I would recommend anything from Logos. Their discography currently consists of three albums. I believe they also do vinyl.

Promenade - Noi Al Dir Di Noi
Egonon - Risveglio
Il Tempo Delle Clessidre - Il Tempo Delle Clessidre
Quella Vechia Loccanda - Quella Vechia Loccanda

Great list!! Finding the Metamofosi CD at my local record store (because my friend told me they had it) was one of my greatest finds ever, SUCH a good album. Some of the lesser-known:
De De Lind
Carnascilia
Grupo Alternativa's Ipotesi
Sun Supreme
Il Volo (already recommended in here)
Both major Jumbo albums
Latte E Miele is incredible, both Papillion and debut.
Maida Vale - Stradaperta (mediterranean masterpiece from italy)
