Topic: Five best albums to get someone into Modern Prog Posted: February 22 2017 at 02:26 |
Might as well do this, as the "classic" era is already covered in another thread. For simplicity's sake, and the purpose of this thread, the starting point is 1990. And you can be introducing someone totally new to prog, or someone who's already familiar with the 70s bands. Just prove that prog didn't die in 1977 or whatever.

Classical music isn't dead, it's more alive than it's ever been. It's just not on MTV.

Let's not forget my # 1 album of 2016:
Knifeworld - Bottled Out of Eden
There are lots of fantastic albums that will show you modern prog is alive and well. Unfortunately, very few of them are as well-known as anything produced in the Seventies.

I'm doing two lists. The first list is post-1990 albums from classic bands/ artist from the 70s, and one that released its first in 1980, just to show that the early ones released good stuff, for those into such music at least, post 80s. The second list consists of some of my favourites from various post classic era bands.
Art Zoyd's Haxan Magma's E-Re, Rbert Wyatt's Comicopera, Univers Zero's Clivages Present's No. 6.
Second list:
Secret Chiefs 3 - Book of Horizons Cardiacs - Sing to God Guapo - Black Oni U Totem - U Totem Aranis - Aranis II
But these lists are really avant-prog heavy and not good as general introduction. Miriodor is what got me into post 70s Prog originally.
Most any modern Prog list of mine would include Bent Knee, Knifeworld, Tortoise, and Chrome Hoof (and Matt Berry).... And I'd like to include the quite retro Electric Orange. After all these words, I don't really feel like I'm up to the task to choose only five that are good and diverse representatives of modern Prog approaches.

It really depends on the person you're trying to convert.
Young guy with yellow socks into the indie scene should preferably start with:
Porcupine Tree - In Absentia Bent Knee - Shiny Eyed Babies Syd Arthur - On And On Sigur Ros - Takk The Moulettes - Preternatural
Old man into Diana Ross: Mirthkon - Vehicle

I would replace BBT with Steven Wilson's Raven that refused to sing and add some RPI (La Coscienza Di Zeno, Unreal City, Astrolabio, Egonon, Ingranaggi Della Valle...).
